Power Steering Issues (again)

I had a whiney pump (and major leakage) so I replaced it with one I got from Nigel. It came off an RS, so I had to change the nipple fitting to hook up the pressure hose...

When I'm turning the wheel, (hi and low rev) in one direction, I have continuous power throughout. However, when I quickly turn back the opposite direction, I find myself fighting the wheel. This is extremely hard to contend with on an Auto-X course, and I need to resolve this.

My fluid is at level, and I'm running Valvoline hi-mileage. There isn't any belt slipping (no squeal, at least). I do not hear any pump whine, and there aren't any leaks anywhere I can see. I've yet to inspect the box up close, though...

Ideas? Shorty thinks it might be the box itself, since all the Pump does is provide constant pressure - not alternating... since it only appears on the rebound (reverse steering direction) and not throughout the turn.

HALP!

I had this prob in my STI when A/Xing too. I changed my fluid to full synthetic and the problem was gone. Man, I was pissed last year when my runs were clean and fast then at the last corner was a tight C-box and it needed a right, left, right and I could not turn the wheel after the right, left . arrrh but maybe that's not your prob just thought I would share info.

it also happens when the fluid gets really hot. it is like the pump stops making pressure and you are fighting the fluid rather than getting assistance.

we had a similar issue on the RS raly car, pump/fluid would heat up and seem to lose assist. fixed issue with a P/S cooler mounted up under hood scoop.

this particular issue doesn't sound heat related, wonder if it's the rack itself? jack front of car, cycle wheel back and forth without engine running, feel carefully for resistance. the fact that the issue is happening when pump is both warm and cold is what raises suspicion about rack itself. if you don't feel resistance when unboosted, that points to pump- or-fluid- or pressure-related issue. could the new hose end be restricting flow or return to pump?

could also be tie rod or ball joints, whle car is jacked up check those as well. grab front wheel at 9 and 3 oclock--wobble here indicates tie rod end play (usu inner on rallyx or autox'ed cars). Grab and shake at 12 and 6 o'clock --play here shows ball joints pooched. neither of these parts SHOULD give resistance if worn, (wobble more likely) but it's possible they're not pivoting smoozly

it's a job for Monsieur Le Dectective d'Auto!!! :icon_scratch:
