Professor Dan: Let's Practice Homonyms!

2point5RS_Dan

HATER DAN
I've noticed an influx of this lately and I've nearly blown a forehead artery and hosed my keyboard down in blood because of it.

Today's lesson kiddies is TO vs TOO vs TWO.

First of all, these words are Homonyms. That means while they are very different, they sound exactly the same!

Lets start off with this little guy:

To

To has two functions. First, as a preposition, in which case it always precedes a noun.

I'm going to Evergreen Subaru.

He went to New England Forest Rally.
This car belongs to Nailman.

Secondly, to indicates an infinitive when it precedes a verb.

I need to flog my RS,

We want to get our cars dirty.

He's going to race his car a track day.

Now lets go over it's twin brother:

Too

Too also has two uses. First, as a synonym for "also":

Can I go too?
He went to Wicked Big Meet too.
I think that's WRXNate's oversexed vaguely Korean sedan too.

Secondly, too means excessively when it precedes an adjective or adverb.

I'm too tired after a day of racing.

He drove too quickly.

I drank too much beer.

Two

Two is a number.

One, two, three...
I saw two Impreza's today.

She put two Hella 500's on her car.

Feel free to practice your Homonyms and make Subaru references in this thread!

About fricken time!!!!!! Great write up Dan. Ask everyone I work with, and my wife, this is one of my pet peeves!!

^ wow. that's like that sentence my Latin teacher taught us once. malo malo malo malo, but i can't put the accent marks in the right place. all different words, but declined properly means something about bad apples

Finally! I can't stand bad grammar and spelling. Especially spelling because modern browsers have build-in spell checking.

YES! Please learn these people! If you're going to claim to speak English, you should know how to write it as well!

Love it! As a teacher, I see these things in posts and it drives me insane!
from the internet? I play decipher before getting upset. I have even been to a place that auto spell checked, changing words.. homonyms, acronyms, slangs, etc. getting created.

then there is all the shortcut keys for giant hands to get pissed at. (the insert key on a classic motherboard comes to mind)

some mispellings are so common, like remember as "remeber".. the keyboard is exactly a pain in the butt for that word. I have even seen it on national news articles...CNN, etc.

I got a heads up on difference in spellings for a language called "shorthand"

.. and old school ways of typing out everything said in a courtroom..

it is hopeless. anybody remember <56k modems and typing into realtime buffers? shortcuts inevitable.

as a teacher, I can see the frustration...but don't even bother getting disturbed over it. crazy as an emoticon, this internet...

If you're having a hard time typing because of your keyboard. get a new keyboard! I have a hard time on straight keyboards, especially on laptops. So when I'm on my laptop I'm extra careful to type. On my desktop though I have a very nice split ergonomic keyboard. I can type on it all day, achieve over 110wpm sustained, and not get wrist pain! I also use the dvorak keyboard layout... but that's a discussion for elsewhere.
