Putting an STI into reverse...

Umm... so on Saturday, I was at Synaptic3 helping out with their huge party. My job was to help wash the primary vehicles and apply the large decals to them. I moved an STI into it's parking spot for the show after applying the last logo.

Well, I forgot it was a six speed, so I ended up stalling it on the first shot. Looked at the shift knob, found reverse and away I went. Now the owner of the car is telling Synaptic that his transmission is fubar-ed.

It seems there is some sort of tab or lever that you need to pull up on in order to get it into reverse. I never did that, but there was ZERO resistance when I moved the shifter into reverse. :sad5:

I'm cursed. Hexed. Full of bad juju.

Anyway, Synaptic is "covering it" because I was a volunteer and was working for them when it happened. I don't know what to make of this. Anyone?

Of course, other than the fact that I am now NOT touching anybody's car for the next lifetime.

no idea how that would even be possible....

funny story when I brought my STI home the first time I didn't know how to get it into reverse to back it into the driveway! Had to go to a parking lot to figure it out and then return home. Damn TonyQ!

yeah that ring that is below the shift knob. you need to pull that up

Would failure to do so result in screwing up a transmission? There was 0% resistance when I moved into reverse.

Owner is claiming a bent shift fork happened.

owner would have to dissasemble tranny to properly claim that. and no you would have to reef on it to bend a shift fork. sounds like the owner is an asshat driver. Someone that owns a modified STi should never blame trans failure on having the car stalled and moved in a parking lot.

just for future reference: most trannies with left-> forward reverse locations have interlocks so that you don't put it in reverse when looking for first.

Umm... reverse was right->back

And the car owner is Brian Calabrese - well known on NASIOC from what I'm told... he's dumped a boatload into the car, and it shows.

I'm familiar with the VW reverse, so after I stalled the car, I looked for the same setup... but found the diagram above instead.

:help: :dontknow:

I duno about that one.... you obviously wouldn't make up raisin about the car going into reverse without effort, but how would you have accidentally put it in 6th first off, etc? Hah, kinda funny I had to tell the kid at the dealership who drove it off the lot for my test drive about the reverse lockout, I told him after he stalled it twice in 6th. :tard:

My only reasonable guess is a mis-intstalled short shifter or something? Maybe his lockout cable is tight enough that it's causing that to happen?

If he has a short shifter, I'd tell them not to be covering it...

Physically, I have a hard time telling a difference between how far to the right 6th and reverse are to each other... if it goes in without any issue, how has he not accidentally done this to himself?

100% Honestly... I'd look into it, no point in having an extra incident on your record when he knew it was cookieed up in the first place and was just looking for a free out... (not making accusations, B.C., just saying, we've all tried it once.)

I didn't look at the shifter prior to putting it into 6th (what I thought was reverse... coming from a 5 spd perspective) so that's why I stalled it.

I don't know what a short shifter feels like in comparison to a stock STI shifter, so I can't say if he had one.

All I know is it went into reverse without any issue (other than my :tard: first try) and now it's "toast" according to him. Either way, it's not on me... Synaptic3 has insurance for this kind of thing. Like I said before... I was a volunteer moving cars, and therefore was covered by their liability insurance.
