Question for the Subaru Guru's

Animal25RS

I have an '02 2.5RS, I'll be swapping out the engine soon...out of necessity (rs engine going bad). What engine would be a direct drop in to replace the old?

I know that another RS do fine, but just wondering what's out there. Thank you.

Pm mike (meyagi) hell be able to answer just about any question you have, and he would do the work for you too

I believe a 2.5L from a 02-07 will fit. You may have to swap the intakes which only takes like 20 min. I have a 05 Impreza and I'm running a motor from an 07.

any 00 to 04 impreza or forester engine should be plug and play. legacy and outback as well. They all used the SOHC motor. 99 was SOHC but had different sensors and crap that chris knows more about but I'm lazy and wouldn't bother.

Any 00 to 04 SOHC will be fine. If you cross into other models besides imprezas, there may be some small differences, but the longblocks are all the same. I personally have only dealt with my 2002 RS.

05+ have different intake (MAF instead of MAP), and 06+ have the weird variable valve lift stuff. Those blocks will work, but you'll have to swap more out compared to an 00 to 04

99 impreza/forester engine will work too. But you need to swap on the new style crank timing gear and the driver's side cam gear. And use your old intake manifold.

It isn't a big deal, just more stuff not to screw up.

You're not going to find a 99 2.5 anyway.

Also, a 99 DOHC block is the same, you just need to change to the SOHC pistons and heads, and change the crank gear.

That's a lot more work, though.
