Race Gas, or other High Octane Fuel

So, when before I did the turbo swap on my project car, I filled the tank up with 93 octane (back when we used to have it here in Maine). I think it's been about two years and it still has the same tank of gas in it because I haven't been able to drive it much. It still has about 3/4 tank, I believe. It's been running like **** and I thought because it was leaking boost. I just redid my y-pipe setup and although smoother, it didn't make a huge difference.

Before the y-pipe got replaced, the car hardly made any power and when you stepped on the gas, it would literally stutter. Quick, short stuttering ... and the exhaust sounded someone was firing a rifle. Since we just did the y-pipe, now it doesn't stutter hardly at all, but it's still making no power. Flooring it up the hill in my dad's neighborhood the other day brought us to only 4.something k rpm and it's a decent sized hill (I could probably make it to 4th in the Bee, although I'm not going to try).

So my question is, could it be that the fuel has degraded enough that it's causing this problem? If so, mixing some high octane fuel in should work, right? Or would I be better off pumping the gas out and putting some new stuff in it?

Holy hell. you have let the car sit for 2 years with the gas in the tank? That is bar none your problem. Gas does go bad usually about a year for a very well sealed place.

Dude! I couldn't drive it, what was I supposed to do ... haha. I'm trying to get it running again so I can drive it but I'm having these issues. And I'm glad you sound so confident that this is my problem, I was thinking it had to be something else.

So Pedro, you think the heet and 91 will do the trick? I would hate to have to fill it up again to find out that isn't going to work and waste more gas haha

only one way to find out..

and I have gotten bad gas from the pump before and HEET has saved me.

I've run the car and tried to at least start it a couple times a month ... it just doesn't have a sticker or registration so I haven't been able to drive it around enough to use all the gas.

I am pretty sure its your gas. I have seen people store there boats or atv's over the winter and no put stabil in the tanks and then they try to crank it come spring and it is just Blah. I am pretty sure once you get the injecters freed up with some good gas.

I recommend you go get the old gas out and then throw some Stabil in the tank with some new gas and let her run awhile. Try that. You don't have to fill the tank up with 91 just put about 5 gallons in it and mix the stabil with it.

+1 on replacing all the gas.

I wouldn't be surprised if you really need to pull the tank to flush it and empty out all the water. Good ole' E-85 being so hydroscopic. My father-in-law had to remove the tank from his snow machine last year because he had at least three cups of water in the bottom of the tank that was really screwing with how it ran. Just putting more fuel in may solve the problem, but swapping out the gas definitly will.

Okay, so best way to get the gas out? What does Stabil do again?

And I think the 93 from Maine was Pre-e85 .... although I could be wrong.

Keeps the gas from Brakeing down and serperating. Also, I have heard it is good for if you have old gas trying to get it out of system like you have. My grandfather puts it in his boat when he winterizes it and always starts up in the spring with no problems. Stabil is your friend right now. You don't want to piss your friend off do you? LOL. I don't think you need to drain your tank as of yet. Just get some good gas in it with some Stabil and see how she runs after buzzing around a bit in it.

stabil isn't going to do anything to change the bad gas in the car now. it is what you put in the gas when you store something.

Believe it or not I have heard good stuff about Stabil cleaning up a fuel system. Kind of like a really really good fuel injector cleaner. I wasn't saying it would meke his bad gas good. Once it is bad it is bad. I was just telling him to put it in there because it would help clean up the fuel system.

throw a bottle or two of iso-HEET in there. red or yellow bottle, I always use red and then top it off with good gas. If there is any water in there at all, that will take care of it. One bottle should do the trick. Don't go draining your tank just yet until you do that. Don't let people freak you out over this. that 93 is probably STILL better gas (after a bottle of 'dry gas') than this crap 91 that we have now!
