"Rattle" from back end while accelerating

This is gonna hurt, I think.

When accelerating at 50% or more power in first and second gear, it sounds like there's something mashing together in the back end of the car.

This is an '07 rex wagon with about 23k on it.

hmmm, maybe we gots to play a leetle Car Talk type noise analysis here

"mashing" noise...is that like a metallic clunking

or like gears grinding

does noise increase/decrease with revs or road speed

does noise change pitch or frequency when you lift off gas?

To me it sounds like a "mashing" - as if coming from the diff. Picture marbles in a coffee grinder.

Stops when I lift off the accelerator.

Does not stop after engine & trans warms up.

It does not sound like it increases in pitch or frequency as speed and/or RPM increases.

my bet is that when the techs pull drain plug on yer diff, there will be chunks of ring n pinion stuck to it.

gotta love warranty coverage!

Haha. That's what the Jeep's rear diff innards looked like when I pulled my limited slip out and had to swap back to an open carrier.

So - Inski fix this about two weeks ago, and it was nothing to do with the rear diff. It was the rearmost exhaust hanger dangling from only one of the two bolts that are supposed to be holding it on. Apparently one of 'em worked its way out, and the second one wasn't far from doing the same thing.

Thanks, 'Ski!
