Rust Issue - Best Fix?

So, the RS has some surface rust on the rear QP over the wheel well. I want to hit it right away before I end up with rot. What's the best thing to do?

I'm thinking sanding down and assuming there's plenty o' body left just hitting it hard with rustoleom.

After that I'm not too clear. do i just have that leetle section painted, do i take it upon myself to go bob ross on that quarter panel? someone show me the way

that's a standard GC series rust area. it's caused by a ledge inside the rear QP that holds grunge and salt, concentrating rust.

#1--clean out behind that ledge

#2--assess if rust IS 'just surface' or if it's perforated the panel, usu if there's surface rust it's also gone thru the panel.

#3--decide if you want a rough n ready repair or want to go whole hog with color matched etc. or go bondo and rattle can. are u restoring the car or just delaying cancer.

#4--based on answers above, either paint it yourself or call in professional help

if i was restoring the car i'd assume i'd need a body panel. i don't mind going to bondo route, it works just fine and looks fine but i don't want it half assed. as i see it the only down side to bondoing areas like that is that it is semi permanent. i'm not talking about filling body holes with bondo, just keeping the original lines and such

if you have access to an angle grinder and some sanding discs, clean off all the paint, apply a thin layer of body filler, sand smooth (don't wait until it's completely hardened or else you will multiple your work load but don't do it while it's still soft either) and then apply some rattle can to it. if the paint matches, you won't be able to tell.

remember the 10 foot rule, if it looks good from 10 feet away, you're golden. if you want/need some help, let me know. I need to clean up my bumper on the truck I got. That's the only place with rust on it. Just take your time and don't get overwhelmed.

as dumb as it sounds...i like having a car that isn't perfect. with the sti there's not a freakin chance i would take an angle grinder to my fender and then rattlecan it. but this is kinda fun. ya know...like car ownership should be!

Mark you had a Cherokee you should be an expert on rust

My dad and I pop riveted in new metal and bondo'd my quarter, then spray bombed it. It passes the 20 foot rule... not sure about the 10 foot. I'll probably redo it this summer but do it better as it's rusting through on the edges already....

I'm probably going to give POR15 a go, since the rustolium I used kinda sucks. If the jeep guys are slapping it on their ratty CJs that sat in the woods, it should be good enough for our rust spot scoobs.

If you really really care, just pay someone who knows what they're doing...

hahaha, yeah I don't blame you.

My folks cherokee is super patched up. I'm not sure how bad Krazykarpenter's old one was, but I was looking at his sisters today and its juuuuuust starting to surface on the door a tad. I love love love cherokees but damn the rust on those things is ridiculous.

^ my mom's already done rockers on her 99 with low miles

on the scoob, you won't really know how bad it is till you start grinding. the brother-in-law's outback had a touch of surface bubble. Ground it down to find a hole behind it, and nasty rust for a half inch around the bubble. ended up filling a 1.5 inch hole with bondo-glass and painted. it's not hard to sand it down if you do it quick and have patience to form the lines, but be prepared it may be worse than you think based on initial evaluation. i get to do all this later this week too

garage with heater? or maybe i'm just used to being spoiled like that. heated garage at work and my dads

sand/grind... por 15... skim coat... sand/fill... paint 1/4 and blend... or what i would do... 17x9.5-10 +20 with 1 inch rivet on carbon over fenders and cut the bad stuff away!

This is what was done on my lego... but with por 15 and some welding... Come look at it. I also just got my coilovers in. They are sick... Meet me at starbucks tomorrow and I can show you them before they go in the car...

when you gonna be at starbucks, i don't work till 11. shoot me a text when you're there and i'll walk down. i dunno if you know where i live but i'm like the 3rd house on that side street

better off doing it right the first time, no matter how much you think it might suck, it'll be better than doing the same thing twice
