scary trailer failure

Chris

YARRR SUBY MONSTER!!
So last week I was towing a trailer with a 16' boston whaler using my '99 OBW. I was about 3 miles from the harbor going toward my house at around 45mph when I started to hear what sounded like a wheel bearing. I slowed down to about 40mph and the sound got less, the BANG and the trailer started to shake and make a horrible screeching metal on metal sound. I immediately pulled over to check out the trailer. Sure enough, a wheel bearing had blown and the wheel was extremely wobbly. Since I was about 4 miles from home I figured I'd just bring it back to the harbor, I got the trailer turned around (a bit hard to do on narrow Maine roads...) and set off at 5mph back to the harbor. The whole time with a horrible metal on metal screech following me. After being pulled over for driving 5mph I finally made it back to the harbor, put the boat it the water. And as I was pulling the empty trailer back up the ramp the wheel fell off

All I could do is think what would have happened if it fell off going 45mph.

Most of the time the wheel just rolls on by and you hope someone picks it up for you. Fortunately for us, we had a garage just down the road from us when we had it happen to our camper.

We had a wheel fall off from the tag axle of our old 40ft. motorhome going down the highway once. Whole rig gave a shudder, and then a wheel went rolling on by doing about 70...haha.
