School me on Ipods

So, my trusty ole Dell DJ MP3 player is on it's way out, so it was time to upgrade. So, I talked one of my vendors into sending me an Ipod Touch on the house. Figured I should finally give something Mac a chance.

So here's my question, what can I do with it? My Dell you just copied music to it, whatever you wanted. It's more that I don't know anything about ITunes. Can I put music from anywhere on there, regardless of where it came from? Or do I have to buy everything from ITunes?

plug it in and add music. mp3, AAC, AIFF... it won't play WMA or OGG files. it'll also play MPEG4 and H264 video (their are some size/compression setting requirements on that though) and a touch can also surf the web and what not as well...

It doesn't play WMA? Hmm... I'll have to see what I have in that format, might be a deal breaker.

Don't really care about the other stuff either. I can poke the web on the 'berry, and don't care about video. I just grabbed it cause it was free and blingy. Maybe I'll just sell it and buy a Zen or something.

play with it a bit, you'll like it a lot...

They have wifi on them, which is nice, browsing the web on them is mad easy..

music, movies, etc...

itunes is a pain in the ass sometimes, there's 3rd party programs out there, though.

it wont play wma's, but itunes will offer to convert it to an acceptable format for you. by default its some retarded mac format, but just change the default in itunes to mp3 encoding and you're good to go.

also you can tell it to sync your whole library and any changes to it every time you connect the ipod, or you can choose to drag and drop stuff onto it.

iTunes will go through your library and convert your WMA files automatically, however you should read this article before you ask it to do that. This shows you how to change that default encoding setting from AAC to MP3 - this way your WMAs go straight to MP3 from the get-go.

Yes, going from one compressed audio format to another WILL result in lost audio information, but if you're listening on a portable MP3 player, you won't notice unless you've got crazy bat hearing.

Yes, you can put music on from anywhere. iPods do have some format limitations, but that's been discussed in the thread already.

Ironicly, my buddy ended up getting one the same day I ordered mine, and be brought it over to play with. And yes, I like it. ;D

Anyway, next question. We tried to load a couple music videos that were .mpg format on it, and it kept giving an error that it couldn't be played on that Ipod. Tried a couple differnt types of files, and got the same thing everytime. Is there a way around this?

need to be mpeg4 or H264 compressed (.mp4) than, as I recall, no more than 640x480 I forget the max bitrate, something like 1500 for mpeg4... been more than a year since I compressed anything for my ipod, and I think the current ones can take larger files too, I have a 5th gen iPod(first ones that did video)

yeah its a bit more picky with videos. i believe there are a couple programs out there to convert from anything to ipod format, i just haven't bothered to find them. i have downloaded 'handbrake' though, you can use that to convert dvd's to ipod (and other) format. the movie comes out with the chapter breaks still and is about 700mb.
