Short Throws ...

So, I actually finally found a shift boot that will fit like a stock 97 one, all the newer ones don't fit. I also need a short throw because mine is just way tooooo tall. Now, I saw the reviews of different one in the product review section, but I was just curious what the difference between the more expensive name brand shifters and the not so expensive ebay shifters are. If there isn't a huge quality difference, sub-$100 prices sound better to me than the $150 range.

If I honestly should go with the more pricey one, would it not be better to just go all out and purchase the entire short throw shifter setup that subaru has? Joel? How much is that, in the SPT catalog?

+1 for da KartbOy

great action, super solid shift feel

one caveat--be sure the circlip holding the white nylon bushing into the shifter is IN its groove all the way around. if clip is not engaged fully, shifter likes to pop apart with no warning. make sure the bushing is pooshed all the way thru the shifter, not just partway where it LOOKs like it's OK. we blew a major rally learning about this the hard way! :BangHead: x69

So I did read a review on the kartboy I believe, but that doesn't help me understand the difference between a $100 shifter and a $20-40 ebay one. Obviously you have name brand quality/support .. but what can the difference be between two pieces of metal that should cost me $70 more? That's the question. i just want to know WHY, quality wise, I should spend 3 times as much for the same thing.

Right, so what is going to happen to low-quality ebay part, that wouldn't happen to higher-quality kartboy part? As I see it, they are both metal, welded, and do the same thing. Tell me why I'm wrong.

tighter tolerances give you better shift feel, less likely to grab wrong gear and bloWed up yer gearbox

stronger shift leva less likely to shear off in your mitt partway thru banzai AX run

better quality bushings last longer before getting floppy

etc etc

cheapo will probly work OK. go ahead, experiment and let us know how long it lasts.

If your shifting more than once you're doing it wrong :tard:
I'd mostly worry about fitment think about all the ebay exhausts that have to be forced to fit and/or rattle...

i don't know if the kartboy one will work with yours i forget what the cut off is.

that said i have a dual adjustable shifter in my car. who the hell knows what it is, or where it came from or anything about it. it doesn't say and it was in the car, it could be a home made one for all i know. the throws are microscopic barely a wrist flick. i need to adjust it back out someday. it's too short.

that said find the best cheepest thing you can find. if the ebay one looks like crap it probaly is.

The cut-off is 97+. IIRC, ur trans came out of Pete's OBS - you be fine.

Kartboy is the way to go and Joel can hook you up with a nice price.

If you want to spend less on a eBay one, go for it. I'm just saying the Kartboy is tried and true - I haven't read anything (pro or con) about the eBay stuff.
