So - here's the scoop on where I was.

I was all set to go to the bbq on Saturday, but Friday at 10PM I got a call from my dad in Bangor. At that moment my mom was on a life flight chopper from EMMC down to Mass General in Boston. She (unknown to anyone, her included) had two aneurysms in her brain, and one of them ruptured at about 3PM on Friday. She was in the pool when it happened, and had the sense to get the eff out of it when she got the most sudden, worst headache of her life.

Anyway, they've operated on her brain once already to clear out the shmutz that the rupture left in her head, and now they're watching her constantly. She's got like a 90% of having a stroke in the next 10-14 days as a result of the type and location of the rupture...which is scary as hell. The upside is that hey - if you're going to have a stroke, the neurological intensive care unit at MGH is probably the best place on the planet to have one.

So - she's good now, no cognitive function loss that we can see yet, however she got one hell of a buzz cut so the docs could open her skull up and clean out the rupture. After the operation, she was quoted as saying "I have these bad headaches - I think it's cause I'm not having as much coffee as I'm used to." Yeah, ma - it couldn't be the horribly invasive brain surgery you just underwent, but it's actually caffeine withdrawals

Needless to say, I'll be MIA from any rides or similar for the next few weeks. Sorry I missed the M&M, but thankfully Ty was willing to deliver endlinks and magnets for me.

Carry on.

Eeek! Scary stuff. Glad to hear that it turned out well. Good luck!

Keep up with your workout schedule! Try for at least 30-45 minutes a day. It helps with the stress.

Wow dude - I'm suprised you even remembered the Endlinks... if I were you I would have just forgotten about them and hauled ass to Boston.

Good luck with everything, Jim. I hope she turns out good!

I had a pseudo aneurysm when I was a kid - in my wrist. It was 'pseudo' because it was self inflicted - fell off my bike and slit my wrist open... docs didn't catch the bulge until 2 days before it was gonna rupture.

Thanks for the wel-wishes, all. Jeremy, those endlinks gave me an opportunity to fix something that night. We all know I'm not a neurosurgeon, and being able to complete something (even as simple as throwing a box of stuff at Ty) made me feel less powerless.

Also, it gave me the opportunity to drive most of the new Gorham Bypass (COMPLETELY dirt and COMPLETELY empty at 10:45PM). My GPS doesn't know about the construction, and sent me right at it. I was confident that if a cop pulled me over, I had an excuse to be driving like a jerk (although not unsafe).

I also learned that my car will not let you set the cruise above 90. You can activate the cruise system, set it at a lower speed, and use the cruise to accelerate past 90, but regardless of how fast over 90 you try to set the cruise, it will coast back down to 90.

I made it from Ty's house in Gorham to Mass General in an hour and fifteen minutes - 90MPH in the far left lane with the hazards going the whole way, slowing only for toll booths. I was flashing cars ~300 yards before I got to them, trying to be as safe as possible, but basically not letting anything slow me down. I blasted by FOUR cops, not one of them picked me up.

I was kind of hoping to get pulled over, because I've never had a police escort before

spend time with loved ones, friends n family NOW, not later. situations like this are why it's so important.

best of luck, sounds like your mom could use some.

Glad everything is turning out ok... aneurysms are no fun and it's good that your mom had other folks around when it happened. My grandmother died from one... Seemingly in perfectly good health (other than the pack of smokes per day) and then one day... bam!

i wish you the best. my grandfather actually just got out of mass general for a stroke, he's doing a lot better now and is at home as well.

Hey mate, been a few days. Hope everything is going snazzy down in Boston. Wish your mother well for me. :hello:

Mom's looking lots better - the docs are still waiting for something bad to happen, but it's looking better and better each day.

Dad's looking better, too. Every step in the right direction she makes, he gets more of his appetite back and gets more excited.

Thanks for the good thoughts, everyone

Good news Jim...

w00t! Mom's moving out of the ICU even as we speak. Things are looking good, although they'll have to install a permanent brain drain to keep her cranium from looking all "rubber Johnny" in about a week. (Bonus points for getting THAT obscure reference, lemme tell ya.)

Anyhooters, things are looking up more every day. Thanks for the positive thinking. I think it's paying off

WOOT! Mom's being discharged at this very moment. All further treatment can be done in an outpatient setting - read: at home in Hampden.

I may take the rest of the day off.

I did

Drove to Hampden last night - and then back to Yarmouth last night, too.

Coffee is my friend today.
