so my father gave me my great grandfathers 61 starcraft boat today for fathers day...he claims the 50 hp mercury is a bit large for the boat and suggests i either trade or buy something smaller.....so if anyone is looking for a bigger motor and would be intrested in trading for my mercury with controls id be intrested....im looking for something in the 15-30 hp range, mercurys, johnsons or evinrudes welcome...must have controls...let me know

how big is the boat and whats it made out of? I had a little 14' aqua sport with a 140hp motor on it and it went great...

15 ft starcraft, closed bow aluminum boat.....my g grandfather ran a 40hp johnson when he was usuing it so i dont see why the 50 would be to much, but since i like to fish and usually troll, super low rpms might be an issue for it, maybe i should just find a 9.9 kicker and run both.....

Consider getting a Stingray Hydrofoil stabilizer for the 50. That will probably keep the bow down and the boat should be much more stable. Years ago I put one on a 70hp motor that I had installed on a 16ft Mirrocraft. That was probably a comparable boat to yours. It made a world of difference.

I would suggest a 4 or 6hp kicker on a boat that size. I have a 9.9 on my 19ft fiberglass cuddy, and it's a little faster than I would like for trolling.

Nigel may have some very good advice on this matter.

sounds like a good idea to me.....know anything about closed end pop rivets??? or if anyone locally has them...need to replace a few and not intrested in the nut and bolt with silicone fix.....haha

50 is def not too much for that boat. Those old 4cyl 50 mercs run awesome at low rpm for trolling, id leave that motor on there if it runs good and all....

try the boat with just the 50 for starters. it'll probbly be fine. if not, ahem....you might consider purchasing the trusty Mariner 8 hp that's eating up space in my garage.
