Sputtering?

So im getting some sputtering when im on the gas. It only shows up when I am for eample in 4th and need to shift to 3rd. its like its bogging down. Doesn't happen when I am in the right gear. Today wehn it did it the CEL light flashed for a bit and then went away.

Last time it did this it was a fouled plug, but I changed those less than a year ago.

So what are the prime suspects?

Plugs, wires and intake?

plugs or filters would be my guess. but what do i know

What happens when you are in a high RPM? Does it only sputter when you're on the bottom end of a gear?

If it's just on the bottom end, I'd say plugs. If it happens at the high end too, I'd say fuel pump or blocked fuel filter.

Yeah just the bottom end. Seems like plug which is strange because I fixed the oil leak and changed the plugs.

do you have a scan tool? I would see if there are any codes stored. could give you a little insight.

did you do all of the cam cover/plug gaskets?

if not, it's likely you got another leaker. flashing CEL is a misfire indicator, and intermittent misfire is classic sign of the 2.5 cam covers leaking around a plug.

I replaced all four seals last spring. But knowing myself I probably botched it. I'll pull the plugs and check the condition.

Could it also be a bad wire?

Sure - you could be arcing out somewhere and not know it. Check for abrasions or melted wire. Do you here any misfires at idle?

don't need to actually pull plugs to check for oil leaks. just pull the boots...if you find a gooey oily mess on there, you just found yer plobrem

Replaced all wires this weekend still getting the sputtering. It only happens when the car is in gear and at the low RPM range.

No oil on the plugs or boots. I did notice that one of the plug's ends was worn down to an angle on one side. I'm going to replace all the plugs and see if that helps.

sounds like a bad coil to me do the water spray test and see if the coil starts arking
What is the water spray test?

Is the coil pack the bit where all the plug wires connect to?

spray a little water on the wires and see if they spark when running. its best done at night.

yes the coilpack is the thing all the wires connect to.

what about a bad ground? do you have a grounding kit? i've heard of a lot of people with rs's solving their hesitation problem with a grounding kit.

check for detached/degraded vac lines or connectors.

backfiring, esp at low revs or idle, could well be idle air control stepper motor starting to sh*t de bed. btdt.

Its strange since it only happens in gear. When in neutral I can rev all the way through with no problems.

Nigel, where exactly is that located?
