I was using my computer a while ago and this stupid little thing popped up, and just keeps popping up ever since. It says the application cannot be executed. The file wuauclt.exe is infected, and then it asks me if I want to activate my antivirus software. I already have Norton antivirus. What should I do!!!!!!!!!???????????

It will allow me to open it, but it's seems a little wierd. And blank internet explorer windows keep popping up, as we speak!!!

I have run norton several times. I am gonna try the malware thing. How do I start in safe mode?? I'm pretty dumb with computers!!

did some research on the file:

Process name: Windows Update AutoUpdate ClientProduct: Windows

Company: Microsoft

File: wuauclt.exe

Security Rating:
spyrate1.gif

Windows Update AutoUpdate Client. This is a background process which checks with the Microsoft website for updates to the operating system. It shows up on the Task Manager's processes list when it is waiting for a response, such as to confirm permission to download an update.

Note: The wuauclt.exe file is located in the folder C:WindowsSystem32. In other cases, wuauclt.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm! Check this with Security Task Manager.

Virus with same name:

Backdoor.Clt - Symantec Corporation

Troj/Cult-B - Sophos

Well I don't know what I did, but it isn't popping up anymore. I couldn't run the malwarebytes because it wouldn't let me

Safe mode:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true

To start the computer in safe mode

1.

You should print these instructions before continuing. They will not be available after you shut your computer down in step 2.

2.

Click Start and then click Shut Down.

3.

In the drop-down list of the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.

4.

As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8.

On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press F8 when the boot menu appears.

5.

Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.

6.

If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.
Press F8 when your computer is starting up.

Malware bytes + avira antivrus is the best freeware anti-virus tag team crew. Usually straightens out most basic stuff. Glad its working, but if there's any funny business, definitely post about it.

I like Avast! as free antivirus. It's always worked well for me!
Avast and avira are both super sweet, just preference. Avg used to be good but its missed stuff over the years so I don't recommend it anymore. NOD32 is the best if you're insistent on using a pay virus scanner.

Thanks!! I really appreciate the help!!

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. If you have any more computer troubles give me a hollah, I can come over and make it better for ya.

So what would the reason be that I can no longer up load pics to the internet?? It has been ever since that stupid virus thing

I use avast! + Malware Bytes + AdAware....

Got malware bytes yesterday, because my computer started playing audio commercials when nothing was open, and the memory was clutter as heck. avast! got rid of the culprit - some virus....

No way in hell will my wife touch my computer again....
