the old sube is almost done...and..

I need to let the old sube go, and it is indeed my serious project.

I have a 1987 subaru GL 123k, dual range, fixes to the point of physics surprising once owners of the same vehicle (that ought to say it all). It is headed for 25 successfully, I have a goal to take it off the road to keep it safe next to someting classic, and can't seem to pull of this necessity without selling. Next month is a new sticker (no worries at all there) Here are the repairs, I will edit as I remember more details.

weld/body:

rear end tube - I found the oe version, even when this car was young, did not allow for full diff lock, squiggly little bugger by microns, I finally found the weakness after it turned 20 or so. Now it has full diff lock in 4 lo, lsd in 4 hi, and 2wd is free. Fixed with laminat over the oe tube, some sheet, and 2.5 pounds of weld..it is "forever'd" if to say so myself.

rocker panels- oe replacement by millsupply. I doubled over the originals, still doing thier job. one was simply dented, the other need a new edge, further beyond this, thinking of how strong 4lo gets , I added a hidden steel spring rod approx .25 diameter to the length of the rocker. miraculous. As of now, the inside of passenger side is still oem, and may get to it before a sale for extra strength.

wheel arches- also oe replacement, doubled over original. as of now, the weld seams are filled in roughly, and is awaiting some good days to get it done pro. I also have paint and urethane...the weather has not been my schedules friend.

rear quarters- also oe replacement for a sedan. they have more curves thatn a wagon. The wagon looks good with them. custom welded in with steel added to finalize a great fit.

rear corners- this turned out to be some silenter for unibody einstein. I remade them with 1mm steel for an exact fit. noone can see it without taking bumper off.

interior wheel wells. Up front I added 1mm at the engine arms, again thinking of 4x4 modes, and in back, I made the wheel wells, some of it is quadrupled. Taking interior out to look at them finds ugliness for function. Also a lot of welding in these areas.

the belly pan is all oem, original. it was the inspiration to weld at this subaru. Underneath the carpet has a shiny floor...to this day...

I painted the tunnel, drivehaft and a transparent light on the rear..this car does 80 in awd without a noise..not even a new subaru gets away with that.

The engine had simple problems, I have remembered this version for years. this single carb version, one of 2 years subaru made it, had a crazy large plenum designed for 2 carbs by subaru installed. All egr is removed, flows fixed. It is quite sporty and same fuel consumption. mid 30s is its norm, seemingly nomatter what I do with it. the highway is as mythological as an old beetle.

15 inch alloy peugeot wheels, exact fit, of course with the fatter lugs. t-rated nokians (needing a new set) are still inspectable and on the car now.

kyb struts rear. oe replacement, the car is jacked up slightly even loaded. (the 1987 had 200 pound rear springs- subarus "tractor trailer")

I have what could be 500 photos since 2006 of my tinkerings.

spare parts include an entirely complete ea82 out of a loyale (9.5:1) and with less than 100k miles. A spare disty, brand new for a carb version. strut assembly, steering rack, etc etc.

many wheels.

simple perfomance gains are from dynomax, my own custom exhaust (much fatter where it needed near rear axle) accel, carter, mr.gasket..the engine is all original.

There is many other things I cant even remember, the strong stuff (pun intended) is listed. before paint it is at 2500, after paint, noone is going to pay me my asking

I need to go back to my reality of daily driver, the sube is headed for the most deserved immortalized I have ever encountered from a japanese model of anything. recently inspited by a junked bimmer, I am leaving the subaru world after this, the last subaru of integrity in my mind. Some know what I mean, others just don't know...

I want to move on. I need to sell it to a collector. I may try a dealer with it, but one knows how that goes with blue books and idiots.

I am willing to trade however, sedan bimmer, basic 3 series...

ahem....the GL/DL is NOT the most bestest Subaru, or the 'last suby of integrity"

update, young man!

GC chassis is the way to go for your next project. daily driver simplicity mixed with honest to gawd World Rally capability...if you ain't tried it don't badmouth it.

early GC 2 door or 4-door or better yet the hatch body with a 2.5 plunked in, w/4.11 5-spd close ratio gearbox with matching viscous limited slip rear diff (both easy available from thousands of junked/wrecked Forester Ses) and you gots the vaunted 2.5RS, except without the inflated resale values and boy-racer crapola to undo.

we (you) don need no steenkin turbOez!

True. Also a guy who has pownd 4 GCs, logged 25 road and stage rallies driving em, codrove another insanely fast JDM powAred GC STI , These cars are light, stiff, and can easily be made to handle like a dream. Stuff in motor of your choice, fast as your wallet allows.

Otherwise you could install an EJ220 and have a gas sipper that will still seriously rip on low-grip gravel dirt snow or mud. Trust me, BTDT. Team O'Neil runs base 2.2 GCs as skool cars, and while giving 'spank me' rides to students I've found that STI/Evo doods are continually amazed at how fast those old Imps will go.

Meanwhile U are getting 25 mpg, maybe 30+ if you are mindful about maximizing mileage.
