Tick Tick Tick Tick...

Chris

YARRR SUBY MONSTER!!
I have what I think is a noisy valve. It isn't really that bad though. I have heard a lot worse on older diesels. Today I did a lot of research and found out that I probably have a tired HLA. From my research they look pretty easy to replace.

My question is, should I take them all out, test them one by one, and only replace the one that's bad? Or just go and replace all of them so I don't have to go pulling it all apart again?

The latter seems like a better choice, but I'm having a hard time finding any replacement HLAs, so I'm not 100% sure what replacing all of them would cost.

Thanks.

How bout just keep running it. They will last without any negative effects for a long time. Then when it comes time, I don't see why you couldn't just replace the one that's noisy

It isn't bad for the rockers to be tapped constantly like that? I figured over time it would wear the valvetrain out and cause more damage in the long run.

I have known MANY of these motors that have made the noises and they lasted forever with it. But I know what your saying, you're worried about doing any more damage to it. I just personally have never replaced any of those. that's the only reason I said it.

my 09 tapped right off the lot haha...

most subarus do, especially the 2.2... so i really wouldn't worry about it.

if you're concerned, replace all the lifters on the bank that's tapping. they shouldn't be too expensive, and evergreen, napa, or AI should be able to hunt them down for you.

If I run into an excess amount of time I'll do something about it. Stuff like this drives me nuts... haha.

From what I've seen online it doesn't really look that hard, I think I saw a thread on USMB detailing how to do it.

Yeah there is probably tons of info on there about it. But also, when was the last time you changed your oil? That might help with the noise a little as well

I changed it about 150 miles ago. And the previous change was only 3,500 before that.

could always try a thicker oil like 10w-30 or 5w-30 rotella T

I think the rockers can be adjusted. I don't know for sure. Its easy in the 2.5s, not sure about the 2.2s, never done it.

changing oil...or changing oil treamtent like motul or lucas oil stuff on the counter at autozone....well, let's just say it's cheaper than new suby motors. BTDT (angel face smiley goes here)

ticking is normal....umm, sounds like a subaru

less worry if ticking when motor cold, then less once warmed up

I would say run Lucas in it... YES it does foam at high rpms... but on your car/most cars it wont.

My truck had a oil filter failure I drove 4miles thinking I blew the motor (oil was spraying everywere and oil light on) I pulled into Napa and found it to just be the oil filter 6qts down... Added oil and good to go NOT EVEN ANY NOISE that was 1k miles ago and it runs fine. IT HAD LUCAS IN IT at the time
