is getting your headlights or tail lights tinted illegal?

yes.

but if it's a slight tint (not VHT Nightshades crap) then you may get away with it.

basically, anything that restricts the light can be considered illegal. it's all up to the interpretation of the officer or inspection tech.

I'm all about being able to see in front of me, and the idiots behind me seeing me as well...

That being said, yes it's illegal. Any of those tinted covers you see on trucks or Chevy Cavaliers (those are the only two things I've ever seen them on) all say "For Offroad Use Only".

I'm pretty sure that there are guidelines for the distance the tail-lights have to be visible from and something similar for the headlights. I'd search the law-books (http://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/statutes/search.htm).
