tranny noise

I have a question for you guys, i have been searching nasioc and rs25.com for a while and have not gotten anywhere, my tranny seemed fine and about a year ago i replaced the fluid with mobile 1, then in october i pulled the motor for the head gaskests and put everything back toghter and it seemed to work just fine, but about 1,000 miles after my motor went back in the tranny started to make a humm, and the hum gets louder as the speed increases, and is louder in fifth gear, the noise also gets quieter, but is still there when its moving in nutural, but the wierdest thing is when the car is moving in nutural without the clutch in and i wiggle the shifter the noise gets louder again, i am getting use to the noise now, but i dont want to do too much damage to the tranny, where should i start in trying to figure out the problem?

open up the tranny fill, and dump in some sawdust and banana peels---that'll fix your noises! >

it sounds like your main shaft bearings are pooched or the nut on the end is loose. I had a similar situation with my 00 RS gearbox,(noises like you describe) it was a warranty repair where the nut holding gears onto end of main shaft was loose, lucklily I got it to the shop before really bad sheet happened. Evidently this issue is not unknown at suby shops. once you get to the point of tranny moaning AND crunchy shifts, you at the point of no return.

good luck.

if it would be the main shaft bearing or the end nut being loose would this be someting that i should try to fix eventually or just leave it and wait for it to get really bad and replace the tranny, the only thing is the car only has 62k on it so its not like the tranny has really seen that much use.

get thee to a tranny shop, stat!

the longer you wait, the more likely chunks are to be falling out the drain plug when you finally get somebody to look at it.

"sheesh...it wasn't that bad a problem, why'd you wait so long to fix it?"

is taking it to a tranny shop my best option, becuase used rs trannys are pretty easy to find for no too much, but do you know of any good tranny shops in the lewiston auburn area?

you don't know enough about the actual problem yet, so it's premature to decide the old "repair vs replace" question. if the trans is repairable, then fix it--at least you KNOW what you have then vs buying an unknow item that probly has its own issues as well.

somebody on here must know a good reliable suby specialist in L-A ???

it you're lucky, it's something simple. tryng to diagnose noises online is pretty hit or miss. you dont even get to make goofy noises like on "Car Talk." ;D
