yea I know how to do all that and I know that usually people leave the modem in bridge and then do automatic dhcp server for the router but I did all that and it still wont work.Connect your laptop to the router, and then in your browser navigate to http://192.168.1.1
That should take you to the router home page and it should have some basic welcome to setting up your router page. I know netgears do that, don't know about linksys and the wrt54gs as I usually put different software on them right out of the box....

Totally forgot you have teh computer skillz, yea if you could take a look when you come over that would be awesome! Its been driving me nuts. You could have any IP confliction, IE. both your router and modem are default assigned to 192.168.1.1, try following Dan's advice and in the settings change the IP range to 192.168.2.1 and see if that fixes anything. The default username/password on a wrt54g should be either admin/admin, admin/password or blank/password. Or I can just set it up for you when we come down tomorrow
