Tuning Explanation

So, Tuning has been new to me since I joined this site. I've sort of put together a general understanding of it, but I really don't know much about it. Can anyone give me a good explanation of tuning. Does it go away if your battery gets disconnected and the ecu gets reset? I've heard people talk about Rom Raider and some other programs. What does it take to tune your car yourself? When is a tune necessary? Really any, and all the information you've got will help me. Thanks a lot guys.

I have similar questions.

Basically, I think that the tune is the programming for the engine.

"When the pedal is down this far, put in this amount of gas and this amount of air depending on what this sensor tells me." and so on and so forth.

It would be cool if I knew how to do open source tuning, or if I was just able to play around with stuff.

maybe i'll make an "understanding opensource tuning DIY" when i get around to it? if anyone's interested.

sure, and would you mind throwing in a tutorial of actually doing it?

Just kidding, the info is probably out there somewhere that I could find on google.

i would, but it's different for every car and ecu. experience really is key. i'd say that hanging out with someone while they tune, and having them explain what they're doing would be a good start. it's not something you can jump into by any means, and if you do, you're probably asking for trouble lol...
