Turbo Rebuilds

Has anyone done their own rebuild before? I see that you can get a kit from turbochargers.com for $150 for a TD04 but I have to wonder if it is simply a better idea to send it out and have it done by the pro's. I would also be looking to get it PnP's at the same time.

As far as I know there are only a few companies that folks seem to trust. Blouch being the main one. Has anybody had any experience with other companies?

I pulled an OG Saab 900's T3 apart a long time ago.

best thing is to soak the whole thing down with ATF for a few days. the hotside gets really stuck bolts

they had it for a week, they did a p&p, and a balance. also removed a big chunk of cat from the housing, that somehow didn't damage anything.

$230.

Well, I got my turbo shipped off to Blouch on Tuesday. When I removed it, I found a chuck of aluminum in one of the oil feed banjo fittings. Guess I know what happend.

I got the replacement/extra one I bought installed last night. 95,000 miles from a forester that was owned by a doctor. Looked almost brand new, almost no rust on the hot side. I had to remove one of the studs because I broke that stud on my original turbo, it came right out with no problem. Not the slightest bit rusted.

The weird thing is that I think I am still burning oil. If I lift the hood while the engine is still hot, or in the car when I start moving from a stoplight, I get a distinct smell of burning oil. I am not sure where the oil could be coming from. The block and surrounding area is clean, it doesn't get hot enough to burn oil. I am wondering if I need to replace the crush washers in the oil feel line. You expect things to smoke and burn off initially but it is still doing it after two half hour drives.

you will be happy with the work blouch does. have you checked to see if you have a drip on the underside of you timing case? could be a cam seal.

No, but it is defintly smoking from the area of the uppipe. It was smoking bad on the first test drive, but I tightened down the banjo bolt on the engine and that seemed to stop the majority of it. It is almost like it is a large amount of oil residue on the exhaust. Or a slow leak.

Well, I talked to the folks at Blouch this afternoon and they said that there was no signs of wear and no reason that the engine should be burning/using oil. So there is nothing that they can do for me. Really strange.

I am just glad that I didn't have my car up on blocks this whole time. At least they said that they where going to waive the $90 dismantle and inspection fee. Now I don't know what I am going to do with that turbo because I am defintly not putting it back on my car, I doubt anybody else is going to rebuild it, and I certianly don't want to sell anybody a bad turbo...

wow, sorry to hear that the problem is still undiagnosed.

on a positive note though, i'm glad to hear that blouch treated you right. another place might have fed you some story, and charged you for this, and that. sounds like a stand up move on their part.

i know i was realy happy with them.

I do have to agree. I am not pleased that there isn't anything they can do, but it is definitly better than getting it "fixed" and still having the same problems after reinstalling it.

I am having an oil burning problem right now also. I have no idea where it is going. Not leaks, not coming form exhaust, so that pretty much gets rid blow by.

Maybe my oil is being burned up by the turbo or something.

The only time I saw any smoke was at the Auto-X. There were other times when people told me they saw smoke, like leaving work in the afternoon, when there whould not have been anything. Now it is getting harder because you will have moisture in the mornings at least.

How much are you using in a week?
