Turbo whining really loud and idles rough

I just put new head gaskets in my 92 leggy turbo and it idles very rough sometimes high sometimes low. I put new plugs all gaskets and everything looked good inside. Ive been over and over the vacuum lines all look good. Any tips how to locate a leak?

When my turbo in my 93 legacy SS was whining very loud it was a leak in the Up Pipe. It was just below the flange where it bolts to the turbo. I thought it was the gasket between the Up Pipe and Turbo at first and replaced it once before realizing the leak was below the flange. It was kinda hard to tell with all the stuff and heat shield in the way. Does the exhaust sound loud also? I couldn't tell the difference at first as my exhaust is loud anyway. I could also feel the leak with my hand.

Mine still kinda idles rough... but i have a ton of mods with no EM so probably a different story. GL!! Glad to see another old skool legacy!!

Was your up pipe broken? I replaced the gasket and it looked good. My exhaust is loud as well but only because of the stupid flowmaster muffler.

The UP looked ok. But the weld connecting the actual pipe to the flange that bolts to the turbo had cracked. You could see the flange was dark from the leak if you looked up at it from under the car. It wasn't a very big hole, but it was so close the turbo that the whine sound came out much louder.

At first it wasn't that loud and wasn't effecting performance. But the more i drove it the louder the whine got, performance started to lack, and i noticed the exhaust sounding louder from under the hood.

I'm sure there are other reasons a turbo can whine louder, but IDK. i know upgrading your Down Pipe makes the turbo noise much more noticeable, but in a good way!! :evil1:

If you use some seafoam in your motor, you should be able to find any exhaust leaks
