California: Police Raid Car Enthusiast Gathering, Generate Revenue

Police raid Riverside, California parking lot to issue modified car tickets at local car enthusiast gathering.

Parking lot raidUsing $503,000 in federal and state gas tax revenue to pay for overtime, nine police agencies in Riverside, California sent more than one hundred police officers to surround a gathering of automotive enthusiasts. Owners of imported sport compact cars had gathered at the Canyon Crossing shopping center on Friday night to swap stories, talk about their passion for cars and show off the latest enhancements to their rides. At around 11pm police surprised participants by blocking all exits with fifty police cruisers. Officers then began a warrantless search and interrogation operation of the 150 vehicles that were present.

"If you're not into street racing, why would you need that?" Riverside Police Traffic Sergeant Skip Showalter asked an enthusiast during a similar crackdown last year. "Why would you want more power going to your car?"

Police issued a total of forty-eight tickets for "engine modifications" with police accusing the owners of the parked vehicles of being street racers. Another fifty tickets were issued for paperwork violations, dark window tinting and lack of a front license plate. The most revenue, however, will be generated from the fees imposed on twenty vehicles that were confiscated. Despite labeling the parking lot raid as taking place at a "street racing venue," Riverside Police offered no evidence that any street racing actually took place.

Across the state, gas tax funds are regularly used to fund similar crackdowns that generate big revenue. In 2004, the California Highway Patrol issued a total of 101,553 "modified car" citations worth $10.5 million according to CHP data obtained by TheNewspaper.

Other law enforcement agencies participating in Friday night's raid included the California Highway Patrol, Riverside County Sheriff's Department, and police from Baldwin Park, Fontana, Irwindale, Moreno Valley, Ontario and Mount San Jacinto Community College.

Hmm.. $500,000

20 cars... let's estimate high and say $5000 each = $100,000

100 tickets issued.

I really doubt that a window tint or front plate ticket is a $4000 fine... great use of tax dollars and police resources!

that's what happens when a state is run by the Terminator.

no mention if the group had permission to use the lot, or if there was some kind of group gathering law that they were not observing.

cops n street ricers....not the best combo. like a bunch of dogs shwoing up at a cat convention.

Sure they probably were ricers, but I think in a technical sense, that could just as easily happen to us when we meet. :-

Yep and popular opinion is CA has pretty strict laws concerning emissions and car modification. My guess is most of the hefty tickets had to do with missing emissions equipment, which I'm pretty sure a fair % of the members here are guilty of.

By that logic anyone driving a car with more than 100hp is a street racer because why would you NEED all that powa.

Sure would be wonderful if they used all that money and man power to actually catch people street racing, rather than writing tickets for tint, intakes, cats, registration, etc...

it would have been more funny, if they showed up and every single person there was legit. they had lot permission, they all had there paper work, tint certs, db and everything. so the cops show up all big and mighty and leave with out a single thing hahaha

still that's crap.

been doing some checking with my Cali connections to see what really went down

Der Governator told me the reason they sent 50 cop cars to the meet is that they had a reliable tip that patsti was there :-*

I think the point that got me was that the cops were accusing people of MAYBE street racing sometime in the future.

How would people like it if the cops came to a gun show and wrote summonses to everyone because they MIGHT kill someone? It's not like the cops caught them racing and ticketed them.

I absolutely agree that maybe meeting without a permit could have something to do with it, but calling someone a street racer because they have more power than necessary as a result of mods is too intrusive for my tastes. Why not ask the same question of the soccer mom driving the Yukon? There's more power in those things that the biddies need, but nobody's targeting them because of it.

Sorry. A combination of beer and losing Red Sox got me all fired up >
