Upgrade to OEM Navi in 09 WRX?

Hi guys, I need some information to help in my decision making process. I am probably going to buy a Navigation system and a few other things, but I need some information before I spend money on one. I am using my brother's Tom Tom right now, so I know they are decent units but would I be better off to go with an in dash unit and if so, would I be better off to buy the stock Navi system for my 09 WRX. I found them on Ebay for $499. I know this would not be a great performer in the audio department compared to an aftermarket unit, but it adds some extra contol, functionality, data display and maintains steering wheel controls. I have installed about 10 aftermarket stereo's in other cars, but swapping one factory unit out for a more advanced one is new to me. I heard the wiring harnesses where possibly different too. Is this an install that I could do myself and if so, what else do I need to make the conversion? If I can't do it myself, is this time consuming for a dealership to do? Furthermore, is the stock navi a decent one worth the trouble? I have the premium sound system with 6 disc changer right now.

I have no experience using it, but I've heard the stock navi SUCKS.

I think you would be better off with a TomTom style unit, or upgrading to a good aftermarket in-dash style.

I think you will find that all the money you will spend on the stock navi, and you're left with a stock headunit.

Yea, the stock nav isn't worth the coin because you end up with a stock head unit. Check out crutchfield for some nice in-dash units that will also give you a decent head unit. The in-dash I am looking at is only 200 more than your ebay find and it plays DVDs along with CDs, MP3 hookup, and Nav.

always go aftermarket, and kenwoods have a wire on the back that with an adapter from pac-audio.com you can keep the steering wheel controls!

stay away from the stock navi. i tried one otu when i purchased my car. the audio still sucks with it and as far as navi functions go it is on the low end. it will look great but be bad in the performance department

You could be like me and get a plug and play siruis and a garmin GPS....its how I riced-out my interior:lol:

that's pretty much what I expected everyone to say. I have always been a fan of kenwood. My last 3 head units were kenwoods and the last 2 of them were excelons. I just thought I should ask if it was worth considering. Does anyone know how decent the Navigation in the Kenwood units are? Is there another brand worth considering? Does anyone know in dash aftermarket units from experience or is crutchfield my best source of information? Thanks guys.

Garmin all the way dude. You pay like $200 for a good garmin were its like almost $2k for the oem. Plus, if you ever want to upgrade the oem you have to buy a new nav dvd and it cost a butt load of money where if you want to upgrade your handheld unit it cost like $75 bucks.

I have a Garmin, it's the cat's ass. Totally worth it. It gives better directions that both the Tom Tom and Magellan that have plotted the same destination but the route was a lot worse.
