Used strut(s) question

If I'm buying a used set of struts/spring/tops, is there a way to tell if the struts are good when they are all assembled?

Also, aren't some certain year(s) Forester struts that the spring perch is higher than earlier years?

03 and up perchs are higher and just mainly look for oily spots or residue if there are none they should be fine
