We're adding to the family :)

the $350 I spent on a yellow Lab was BY FAR best entertainment value $$$ I've ever spent. Kudzu lasted 14 years before his habit of smacking into things finally caught up with him.

do obedience training early, you'll never regret it. it's kind of a pain doing classes weekly for a couple months, but SO worth the effort later when the dog behaves when he's told to.

^ can't wait to do just that

Awesome looking dog, he will have a blast on the trails. You have to start them early so he knows to stay close...

Congrats on the addition.

Crate training is the most heartbreaking thing ever. Thought you should know. I had to put my little buddy back in jail after going home to play with him at lunchtime.

Crate training is a heart breaker. I bet that little guy would eat everything in site, or atleast chew in everything...

Cute Pup...

crate training goes a lot easier if you get the pup to WANT to go in the crate

bait him with food, a favorite chew toy...or do like I did with my spaniel Henri...I crawled in (partway) first and made like I was the happiest pup evAr, and he came right in and curled up.

I'm picturing this in my head...and laughing...a lot. :laughing1: Nigel in a dog crate...

seems about right to me.!

Henri sez, row-wow-wooo-hoooowwwwwelllll

rough translation: Bitez-moi, or I bitez-you!

crawling into dog crate might sound funnAy but it works

He was probably asleep 5 minutes after you left. Nigel's right, tho- gotta make that place the puppy pad. It'll be easier on you.

Can I also recommend a gentle leader and the training guide? That raisin works.

I didn't go the gentle leader route, as I didn't want anything over the pup's muzzle. Went with a harness rather than just a collar for better weight distribution on the little guy.

I've been reading "The Art of Raising a Puppy" written by the monks of New Skete, NY. I'm not religious by any means, but all these guys do is sleep, eat, pray, and raise German shepards to sell. For $2,500 - $3,000 each. They're doing SOMETHING right, plus their book is very heavy on behavioral research, which is right in line with my thinking.
