What would cause this?

Some guy on rs25 posted that as his picture for a WTB: RS SOHC LongBlock. Is this a melted pushrod? How intense does the heat need to get to do that? What would cause this, usually?

I'm an idiot when it comes to internals.

boosted NA engine?

yeah... it is a possibility.. but that is one hell of a failure. Look at the discoloration on the connecting rod. there was some pretty good heat there. I am sure that you can create that amount of heat if you are running a turbo and run low on oil or spin a bearing. but I would want to see some more of that engine.

that is not a pushrod, it's a connecting rod. failure was caused by a series of things:

#1: lack of lube

#2: excess heat

#3: clueless driver who had the stereo too loud to hear his motor making the dreaded Death Rattle. ("...I wuz jest drivin along and all of a sudden it stopped" ) :

I have a collection of burnt conrods and toasted pistons....none of which are as bad as that, including a coupl that came out of a 2.5 that experienced bearing failure due to coolant mixing with oil (head gasket pooched) but we were in the middle of a rally and just kept going until the motor seized solid. We knew the motor was headed south...it was clunking and knocking like hell and was spewing smoke and had NO power. Some spectators told us they heard us come by and "we were takin bets to see how far you'd get before it blew up." We made it exactly .4 miles past the spectators and sure enuf, it wuz bound up solid.
