i used the free hr block program. i think it only works if you're under 50K/year or something. go to the irs site to get the inside link. write down all the numbers you come to in that program and then go to the maine revenue service site and just do that one yourself. its easy once you get the numbers from hr block.
I did a multi-state filing two years running (Mass and Maine) with TurboTax.com (an Intuit product, actually).
No complaints, they also offer the service free if you're under a certain income, and I do so love having all of my old taxes stored remotely and accessible to me at any point.
if your taxes are straightforward enough go with hr block online, quick and easy. i also did multi state this year but had three different companies to report earnings from as well as a very confusing transition period when i was in both states so i brought it to an accountant back in mass. i had tried to bring them to liberty but they really seemed to have no idea what was going on with the two state situation. i would also recommend staying away from hr block in person if just to avoid their new system. basically they no longer do direct deposit, instead they setup a pseudo debit account with your returns in it and give you an hr block debit card. otherwise you need to pay for the paper check to be mailed to you.
It's like $20 or something like that...but it's easy, it remembers your last years stuff if you do it on there, and really is quite fast. It took me about 10 minutes to do mine, and I even went through the itemized deduction thinger because of all the house related expenses i had this year.
what ever you do don't go to a indapenant like did for the second time he charged me $75 last year and told me we owed $3600.00 in taxes. then this year it cost $90 and he told us we owed $1000.00. dame buying a house did not help my wife and i at all all we clamed was the house and the taxes on reg. the trucks and clamed 0 all year. i think something is wrong so when we pick up the taxes from him i will get a second look at them and see what is going on. >
Surprisingly, I'm getting some money back this year, thanks to Mrs Lobstah taxes that were deducted throughout the year and my "smart" purchases, such as the Fozz, tires, brakes, hmmm...detailing supplies, etc. (I file as self-employed)
And let's not forget about the "economic stimulus package" (bleh), if you qualify, you'll get a check......someday... ;D
PS: I recommend that you "double check" the return that your tax guy prepared, he might've missed something. 1st year of my self-employment i went to the tax person and ended up paying 2100 in taxes + 100 for the preparation, a year after that i used TurboTax and paid only 1300
Don't! Go to http://www.TaxCut.com, use the online feature!
HINT: YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY UNTIL YOU FILE!
It's a good, easy & cheap way to ballpark what you should owe/receive. Also, if you bought a house and claimed '0, married' all year, you should be getting a return - not paying more!
I used to use an accountant. One year I figured my taxes and I was only getting back $450. I went to him and he was like "$1500 back, woo hoo!"
WRONG!
His creative deductions got me a letter from the IRS. Cost me $1000 and a couple of days at the IRS. The lady was a sweetheart though. She's like "you used "this guy" hmmmm. I see..." I don't think I was the first one from him she had seen.
I do my own now. Take your time and read EVERYTHING. It's not so bad. I get lots of help from my friend named "Labatt Blue"
I love the fact that I can claim Rent as a deduction, and because of the 'biz, most of my expenses (read: OBS purchase, paint, mech work, etc.) are write-offs. ;D
