so, I'm currently on my oldschool dell inspiron 2650, that's 8 years old ( I realize it's time to update) and when trying to log onto the computer this evening 3 times it told me user profle cannot be found currupt or some crap, restarted in safe mode, and can use it a bit, but don't know what ails it. should i just take it out back and use it for target practice, or is it something i can tweak?

Sounds like your user profile commit suicide. This happens from time to time with XP. why is beyond me... that's why I use linux. Anyway, this will probably get you up and running.

Start the machine in safe mode, and create a new administrator user account. Restart and log into that account. If it is an account issue, and not a system issue, this should work fine. Now just go to Documents and Settings and move all your files from your previous user account to the new user account.

You should be back up and running in no time.

Good luck.

+1, this should work. The only thing you'll miss out on is system settings, application settings, and some registry info (not all that important for the most part) from the old profile.

You can copy things one by one from the old user folder to get the profile back, when you copy something, and it stops working again, you've found the problem. delete that and you should be all set.

i could sign on as administrator in safe mode, but it won't let me into documents on my other profile. i don't know if it's because it was password protected or not... it did let me back in after the initial crap out and nothing was there but my desktop icon for ie explore, and doom collectors edition:D

thanks guys

so i got playing around with the "problem child" last night. at first i thought it was odd it wouldn't save the addresses of websites i'd visited moments earlier, then went to play ultimate doom and my contols were all back to default. tried to change the settings. everything everywhere stays at default or switches back right after i change it. it won't even let me change my xp theme to classic windows:iam: gank all important info and system restore? or back to plan A and use it for target practice:D

Can you save a document? Seems like your home folder has been set to read-only.

Although the windows settings would be registry-contained, and I can't imagine that windows doesn't have access to the registry...

A lot of program settings, like for games and stuff, are stored in the invisible files in your home folder in Documents and Settings (hence the "settings" part of the name). So if your home folder (or whatever it is called on windows) is read-only, things wont be saved.

I was more talking about the OS itself. Settings set in Control Panel are split between the user folder (in documents and settings) and the registry.

He was talking about Doom and a web browser, those are things that would be saved in the home directory.

8 year old inspiron 2650, at least its over a ghz...and mobile.

I have never had a user profile disappear. just run the xp cd again.

I am a win98 generation victim, I am still a militant about my computer, shut down a whole bunch of stuff, no sharing, performance settings only, etc. ..and the firewall, zonaelarm for free, shutdown windows version..xp has has that ridiculous remote registry and even router stuff even in the home version. be sure those are disabled.

if xp can run on a celeron 633, yours is still a masterpiece...bios date was 7/2000.I inherited one that never ran proper from day one...why? a 100w powers supply. strange to be in a new celeron 633...

hey, try ubuntu 9.10, that may work nice on the laptop too..

idk. nothing i do stays. can't change desktop wallpaper, can't even delete or move icons. won't delete, and if i move them, they're back where they were when i shut it down. i have an idea where my xp disk is... and for some reason ii have 2 versions of xp on here already, but one is fubar. my stepmom who bought the computer when i was a freshman paid a guy to fix it, and he has dupliicate o.s. on here. wtf

if the system restore doesn't work the brother-in-law got a laptop through school. an Eee or whee or pee or some crap. they run linux and retail around 350. not a lot of hard drive space but pretty quick

EEE, made by asus.

It probably has a flash disk-drive (if you can even call it a "disk" drive). You can get one with an HDD too if you want.
