WRX Transmission

So I'm car shopping. My original plan was to go bugeye, but I've upped my budget a bit and can now afford either a very low mileage bugeye or a normally priced 04/05. My one area of concern is the transmission. Obviously the 5 speed has its share of problems. I plan on eventually going with vf43 turbo setup with accompanying parts, and fairly aggressive tuning. I realize eventually the transmission will be an issue. My question is whether there is a difference in transmissions between the 02-05 models. From the small amount of info I've been able to find I believe that I read in 04 they changed the transmission. Is the 04 truly a stronger transmission?

While I'm at it, I can't find many differences between the 02/03 and 04/05, but are there any others worth mentioning?

edit: messed up model years

heating controls interior is a touch different on one the later years. antenna is in the windshield too.

as for trannys, yes, i think the later ones are somewhat stronger, but still suffer from the same case design and hear widths. at some point (04?) they went to a double cone syncro on first gear which makes it possible to drop down into first while still rolling. VERY helpful, especially if you're auto-x'ing.

good to hear about first gear in 04+. I drove my friends bugeye a couple times and that annoyed the hell out of me. As for saving for the 06, I'll have to run some numbers and figure out just how long that would take, but I have student loans out right now that I'd much rather dump money into if I had a large amount saved.

nothing wrong with WRX tranny that learning to double-clutch and just a SMIDGEN of patience won't cure

97% of subaru 5MT probs are due to ppl rushing 2-1 downshifts. Operator error. As in, "owner fooked upcuz they were trying to save .04 second"

good synthetic lube won't hurt either

Practice make the "crunch" go away. We dont't see nearly as many broken tranny's as you'd be lead to believe.

100% corrrect...

Redline (can be had through me), AMSoil (can had through moodyracing I believe), or Motul (There are sources I believe on here) would all help to protect the transmission.. but driver error generally causes most problems...

i had heard semi synthetic was better? any definitive info on this?
You'll hear everything from all ends of the spectrum of what to use. What's true is a whole nother story. Subaru recommends a GL-5 75W-90 oil for the WRX 5 speed. I'd look for that specification oil and use it, but really the choice is yours. Each oil manufacturer will have their own recommendation too as to which of their products is best.
