My '99 OBS with the SOHC EJ222 is having some headgasket problems. I am looking for a SOHC 2.5 to replace it. Any one have on for fairly cheap?

im not really sure myself, I think there all fairly interchangable, but......ask mikeymeyagi or he'll chime in....he knows it all and prob has a set kicking around hed sell you.

I went the other way on a customer's car once. 2.2 into a 2.5 car. I don't remember doing anything different. But that was a couple years ago. I think I had to change around the evap vacuum tubes. They were routed differently or something. Nothing anyone on here cant figure out after a beer or two.

and you would also need the y-pipe for the exhaust 99 2.2L is a single port and all 2.5L are dual port

Well, your 99 OBS is phase2, the DOHC motors are phase1 so it will not work.

BUT you can swap in a SOHC 2.5 which is a better engine anyway. And that will be a direct swap with just a header change.

Alright, so I have been hearing a couple of different things. Last night I was looking around on some sites, and I had heard that the SOHC 2.5 wouldn't swap in, while the DOHC will. I do understand my EJ22 is a phase 2, but I did not know that the 2.5 also had a phase 1 and phase 2.

Phase 1 2.2 (plugs don't go through valve covers) and DOHC direct swap. Phase 2 2.2 (plugs do go throguh the covers) and SOHC swap.

Swapping across phases is a worthless amount of work.

yep, 98 fozzy is the only year the fozzy had DOHC. Auto vs manual doesn't matter, the engine is the exact same. Just swap your flywheel on.
