02 wrx max boost with stage two

my friend bought an 02 wrx the car already had the supporting mods for stage two flash so he flashed it and can only get max boost of 13.5 psi .. is the difference between 91 and 93 octane enough so he can only get 13.5 psi . rays dads wrx is getting 18 psi same flash and his turbo has bad blow by and he runs 93 octane. could that be it?

First of all... What gear is he hitting 13.5psi at? And what gear is Rays dad hitting 18psi? What are you using to get these numbers? Old boost gauge? Where is he getting 93? Or is he just running a 93 map and using 91? Too many questions to give you the right answer.

You need to have an understanding of what a map changes in the "tune" before you get disappointed with its "poor" results. I would say it sounds about right to be getting no more then 14 psi out an 02 wrx. Who knows.. Just cause the parts are there doesn't mean its put together right. Maybe it has a boost leak somewhere.

I wouldn't like the idea of anything more than 14.5 off a td04, the 2.0, and that 5 speed.

both got max boost in 3rd gear both use same access port same stage two reflash one for 93 and other for 91, different up and down pipe but I didnt think they would make that much of a difference. I was just wondering if people had experiance with playing with 91 and 93 octane and getting a big difference with boost

you think too much

Well I would NOT use a 93 octane map just to get more boost if you run 91 octane. Horse power is not directly connected to boost levels. The difference in a couple psi will make no difference if the map isn't built for it. You need to adjust fuel and timing also along with the boost. Just cranking up the boost to 18psi will net you NOTHING.

Sadly I think you guys lack of knowledge on this is heading you towards popping a motor.

Start looking for other reasons as to why you are not hitting you boost level you "think" you should be. I'm guessing boost leak.

And again I will day I don't think you are that far off from being right with the map. Those psi readings seem right. If anything Rays dads seem high.

that's not what were doing, my dad runs a 93 oct. map because he can get 93 at Pikes Corner Oasis in livermore, Eric is running the 91 map on 91 oct. also they were usisng the accesports stage 2 map, so it wasnt just cranking the boost up without touching other things such as fuel and timing..like its been said 100 times before its hard/impossible to diagnose problems over the internet because communication is lacking/not there. I appreciate your help though Nate

The 14ish PSI seems right. The 18 seems high. I'm not even at 18 PSI with STI stage 2 with the VF39. So I'm betting that Ray, your dad's boost gauge is off, or it's reading wrong.

What Bratman said. I really think too many people are stuck on the unrealistic notion that boost is in direct correlation with horsepower. It's not true. You have to realize that on a 2.0l motor, the td04 turns into a over sized hair dryer.

And YES, yes, yes the difference between 93, and 91 octane maps are big. The knock resistance of good 93 octane is much more then that of 91 octane. More knock resistance the more you can advance the timing and such.

Yea, I have more than a stage 2 in my car and im running max boost at 16, down to 15ish. that's what it read when I had it on the dyno, so I think 18PSI on just a stage 2 is a little high.

ok we found out why it wasn't acting right. but in the proccess we got 22.9 psi out of stock tdo4! . he has a turbo xs ecu and that's why it wouldn't take the flash from access port. and I have personally seen rays dads wrx boost 18 on the access port read out .its not like a constant 18 but under high load.

Be very careful! With that boost level, intake heat can increase tremendously! Add the heat with increased cylinder pressure and your cylinders are just going to fall apart.

Ask me how I know.

Yeah holy POOP, turn down that boost!! With anything 20 or over, you will be asking to pop that motor!!

You seriously didn't know it had a UTEC? Then you accidentally hit 21psi?

Please stop and let someone who knows what they are doing work on that. Or you will end up causing $5000 worth of damage to a $8000 car.
