05/07 LGT

Ok, So i've been doing some searching and reading, I'm thinking of going with a Legacy GT manual transmission, there are more of them in my price range, and still awd subaru. I've read that you can still do mods to them to get decent numbers out of them. I'm not looking for radical, for I'd like to have a daily driver, but a fun car to drive.

With a few typical mods, TBE Cobbs tuning, CAI, does anyone know roughly what i'd have for hp numbers, or does anyone have a LGT and what do you think of it?

Thanks guys.

DO NOT get an 05 LGT unless you plan on replacing the turbo immediately. They grenade all the time. I wouldn't exactly trust any of them, there are some cheap dealers out there who will replace the turbo but you'll still have an f-ed up motor. IMO that car was one of Subaru's biggest mistakes. That was my last vehicle, fun, but it also felt like I was driving around a ticking time bomb. Mine never blew, but most people aren't so lucky with them.

I had an 05 wagon that blew up.

Granted they all dont blow up, but there were issues with the cars. Banjo bolt screens that would clog up and oil starve the turbo. In my case it was long OCI had already weakened the motor. When they first came out SOA said "sure do 7k mile oil changes with dino oil its no problem". Well, when I bought my car at 78k miles it had never really been romped on, so as soon as I got it, poof. Good bye turbo and rod bearings.

A lot of times like joe said they just replace the turbo.

Wow, Subarus are sounding more like a loose loose situation.. lol Maybe i'll just go with a nice ford fusion, chevrolet impala... hahaha...

Thanksf for the info guys i appreciate it.

It's all about maintenance, and with a used car it's almost impossible to know how the prev owner treated it. If you're looking in the 05-07 price range, I'd recommend the impreza lineup, as they tend to be pretty bullet proof, despite possible owner neglect.

My wife's 05 lgt blew up with 60,300mi on it, about 150mi after driving off the used car lot. It ran fine there and didn't display any signs of failure, even with a log scan. The turbo failed and took the entire engine with it. SOA replaced the longblock, oil pump, turbo, and anything that touched oil under good will, since it was just out of warranty. It now has 118k and going strong. I plan to pull the banjo bolt and check the screen in the next week or so. Since the new long block/turbo was in, I've run amsoil and changed it @ 3250mi.

I also want to add that the subaru oil filters, especially on turbo models, are about 4 times smaller than they ought to be. Even though you might run a 10k mile oil, that filter needs to be changed at least every 3700-4k miles.

I'm really lovin my gen 2 outback wagon. I know that they aren't the sought after buggy here, but it's been a every good car for me, good fuel economy, big enough to put what ever crap I feel I ought to be hauling, small enough to get about town with no issues, and a well appointed interior. In the not to distant future I plan on doing some modifications to make it more mine. I want to lift it some and go to 15" steel rims and general grabber at or Yokohama geolander tires. Then perhaps some under body armor.

Forgot to mention the outbacks are solid too! The NA ones are great. If it's an XT I would have it looked at by a dealer, and have the turbo screen checked. If possible, see if it has a full service history.

It's only that particular year Legacy turbo, all subarus aren't like that. As an example the original legacy turbo that first came here from 91-93 is absolutely bulletproof.  There are a few members on here that have very nice examples and they are 20 years old!

You keep trying to cheap out. You cant just go and buy a high mileage wrx and expect everything to be gravy. Legacy turbos are cheap cause they are junk. You get what you pay for, its how things work in a car... Either pony up and take out a loan if you are worried about problems or take your time and find something relatively problem free. These subarus you are looking at are old used cars, not brand new... AND this is New England, raisin rots from underneath cars every day making it tougher to trust used cars.

Have you thought of an N/A impreza, legacy, outback or forester? Those are the most reliable subarus you can find. And they are pretty cheap.... Just because the car has a turbo doesn't make it cool or any better. A stock wrx in reality is pretty friggin slow.

+1 Don't buy something with a turbo just to have a turbo. I had an LGT for a while, and it was fun, but I was always worried it was going to just snap one day and eat my bank account. Now I have a na forester and I like it much better. NA can still be fun, and they are almost always cheaper to fix, plus they get better mileage and still have the awd, which for me is why I love Subarus.

i realized turbo cars are less reliable, but I want a turbo car, im not looking for a race car, but I want something fun to drive, something when I down shift and step on it, it goes, plus awd bonus in the winter months.. im going to keep my eyes open I have one fxt that im interested in that's in limington clean car no immediate issues and taken care of just gotta go little above my budget and try and make it work.. I do want to thank everyone for there input and help on this to

depends on what's been in the feed bag & slop bucket
higher clearance in the outback = more body roll = handles like a fat pig

Kinda depends on what you want out of your ride I'm thinking. If you want it to lay down a fast time on asphalt, sure, low and very firm is the way to go, but across open terrain? Ya, higher the better, and most guys that are serious about their off road ability disconnect or remove the sway bar to get more articulation.

ive got a 2006 trailblazer that will have a small lift in it soon, so if I want to go offroad ill use that, I want a every day driver, that has decent power, and can get me where I want to go...lol
