4th gear grind

So for pretty much since I've had my Forester it has a had a slight grind going into 4th. But it's only when I'm really getting on it. If I'm driving normal it's fine, but if I am taching out 3rd, and shift into 4th it grinds just a little. If I shift REALLY slow it won't, but anything but extremely slow and it makes a little noise. Is this something I should be worried about? Or will it be ok?

grinding anything is not good. it means metal is not synchin with the other metal momentarily. But if you know how to avoid the noise and do it, it probably wont get worse. just change the gear oil and get any crud out so stuff isn't damaged any more by floating debris.

miles?

MMmmmmmm.... motul .....

if it were my car I'd change it with regular gear oil, then 100 miles later change it again with something fancy.

Then if the noise was still there I'd pop off the tail shaft, get the center diff out, and re-torque the end shaft nuts. Then if it was still there...and it really bothered me...I'd rebuild it with all new 3rd and fourth gear stuff. Or swap in a used unit and save the old one for rebuild when I have time.

Yeah it really doesn't do it that bad, only when I'm really taching 3rd and I shift to 3rd, but If I go really slow it does nothing. Maybe when I get a chance I will change out the fluids.

I know everyone is in love with high end synthetics, but when my 03 wagon was having slight syncro issues I switch to lucas heavy duty tranny fluid with some of their stabilizer. Much betterer, but it was a little stiff on cold days until the tranny warmed up. My $.02.

Did it fix the grind?

It got rid of grind going into second and minimized the grind into fifth gear. It was lucas oil, 1 quart of stabilizer and about 2 quarts of heavy duty racing tranny fluid. Got it right at NAPA.

shift mindfully and it won't get worse -- till it gets worse down the line. which might be a good long time.

personally have good experince of motul making trans quieter w'less graunching.

how long since last change, it would probably be good to ensure there are no chunks bobbing about in there. did you find any metal or silvery sludge sheet on drain plug before?

Slight thread jack: is it a good idea for me to change my tranny oil to get what used to be my reverse gear out of there? I'm still grinding quite a lot when going into reverse. I still feel like maybe the clutch doesn't go all the way down.

Many people have great luck with Motul, it is good stuff.

I was just suggesting a more thrifty alternative to see if there is any hope.

i used motul when changing oil in my Brighton, it made quite a bit of difference. Shifts were quieter and smoother, and that's on 180K mile tranny and diff. EG has a decent price on motul too....

i've got the exact same problem as the OP. It doesn't bother me so much because it happens so infrequently, but when it does it makes me cringe badly. Keep us updated on what you end up doing.

I have tried the Lucas stuff in my 240 when I was having grinding issues and it seemed to help but like someone else said, it takes a lot longer to move at all on cold starts. That thing was a bear on colder mornings without a proper warm up time.

Yeah I already have Motul in there as Gabe pointed out. I checked the dip stick and it looks great!! But I might still end up trying the Lucas stuff.

with yours nate i would try putting the car in 1st gear first then go from there to reverse with the car stopped.i have had a few subarus that would pretty much lock me out of reverse until i put it in another gear first or even roll foward just a hair to get it into reverse

Very good idea Gabe. I too have had many Subarus that worked well with.
