anti lock brakes suck.

The two '99 Imprezas I've had close experience with still lock up the wheels even with ABS on.
Now that I think of it, there was one time before I got my license that I was riding with my mom in my Subaru and some one cut us off. She slammed on the brakes and they locked up for a little bit.

The ABS in my 2009 Subaru WRX doesn't seem that much more advanced than my 1997 Grand Am GT or my 1994 Mercury Sable were. Really it just makes more noise in the older versions but from what I have seen, ABS is ABS and if you dont have traction then it just clicks a lot and the pedal won't press more than 1/4 of an inch. Your better off to use your engine to brake under those conditions. The only serious difference I see is durability. The newer they are, the smaller the sensors are and the thicker the wiring is going to be. I drove the Grand Am without ABS off and on becuase the wiring kept braking, as it got older, it got brittle. It always stopped better in the winter without ABS, but I was use to having no ABS before I bought it. I also always used studded snows with FWD cars.

In my 08 I dont think its too bad. Every time when I go down the hill to my place which is usually one sheet of ice I like slamming on the breaks to see how far I will slide. Surprising enough it works well too well for my liking. Its not as fun as my old volvo wagon talk about ABS being useless. In any wet weather you, just look at it funny, it wouldn't stop and just keep on sliding.

What tires do you have?

As is said in ALL these ABS threads, tirs are the best way to stop fast in slippy conditions. Regardless how you brake, or if you have ABS or not.

Right now I am using Mastercraft Strategy tires. Hopefully they will wear a lot better then the crappy Bridgestone Potenza RE92A that came with the car.

Without a snow tire you're not going to stop really fast on snow/ice no matter if you have ABS or not.

1st you need the know the capabilities of your car. Drive sensible for the road conditions and have dedicated winter tires. The purpose of ABS is to prevent you from locking up the brakes and come down the road sideways. We are talking about driving on public roads. ABS is suposed to keep your car straight under emergency braking conditions therefor giving you a chance to manuver and stay out of an accident.
