back from the garage, this is what they wrote...

Inspections are just roulette games. Some people will pass things others wont, just how it is.

in the case of this one, find a garage that welds. Even a muffler shop could have an inspector (they sometimes go on other welding ventures).. if you do any work, they ccan no bullshit you if not looking like subaru. My own is tripled and of course undoubted by someone who knows what they are doing as a career.

I am guessing near 100k miles for your sube.

the gaskets and subframe could be the intermittent evap solenoid not allowing the superlights to cycle. If those build up, your car already has the symptoms.

being an n/a engine and ingenuitive, I would literally vacuum control it without a solenoid but by the engine only, from cold startups, to warm all year round...

it is my 1987 subarus only mishap going into serious drama. I knew the newer vents went solenoid, and they are controlled thermally... maine presents a problem for this as it gets colder: it may not open for 6 months at atime.. and that is bad news.

that's because theres so many inspectors that dont follow the law exactly as its written or you get some dumb inspector that doesn't give two poops about the vehicle being safe and only wants the 15.50-18.50..in the end its about safety.....,ive passed trucks with fogs removed if one is smashed, you dont need fogs...not a safety item.....missing a sway bar completly is a safety issue....its there for a reason.
Just FYI, a missing front sway bar on an old Subaru is NOT a safety item. It really does nothing for the handling of the car, and removed, actually gives it wheel travel off road. I have removed it off every one of my old Subarus

My car handles just fine with no sway bars. Didn't have a rear from the factory, and the front was puny anyway. It handles real nice on dirt or snowy roads. Very easy to control and drifts nice.

its absolutely a safety item...whats the purpose of a sway bar!!!! were not talking about off road vehicles here....yes disconnecting a bar is great for off road but not for everyday driving on pavement.....

I've never had an issue with it. I don't drive that car like an idiot on the road. I follow this thing called the speed limit and don't tail gate. The rear end looses traction on pavement before front wheels lift off the ground anyway. The ea front suspension is different than EJ, the early ones didn't have sway bars and they were fine. If you don't like me having a disconnected sway bar on my car turn off the road if you see me coming.

Not trying to be an DONKEY, but I'm not doing anything really dangerous or stupid considering the vehicle I have. Live and let live.

I'm telling ya, it does nothing. lol

im not saying you are.....im sure someone can drive there car without one but if it came with it factory it was put there for a reason

Some of the earlier base model subarus I'm pretty sure came without one and had the same suspension. It's a handling upgrade is all. My car doesn't have a rear sway bar from the factory, but the turbo model has the exact same suspension and came with a rear sway bar. Does this mean taking it off a turbo car would be unsafe when the lower model came without one?

My car also came from the factory with an auto transmission, that doesn't mean auto trannies are better

Well, something I think that isn't taken into consideration (but should be) when inspecting a vehicle is how much of a moron the owner is. The safety inspections should start the steering wheel holder as 99.9999% of safety starts there, not with the car. I've always maintained my vehicles not only fixing or repairing when necessary but also preventative maintenance. I hope that you have seen already that I cant stand to have any issues with my vehicle and everything must work as intended or I start to twitch uncontrollably. Most just have no clue about their vehicles or just don't care. Also the relationship that you build with your mechanic also be considered. My mechanic will know that the only reason that I brought him my car is because either I can't do it myself or I just don't want to.

If you were to look at the rust issues on the brace you would probably say, "that doesn't look bad at all" cause that is what I said. I respect the shop bringing it to my attention cause that is what I paid them to do. Should the car not pass a "safety" inspection cause there is rust hole on a "brace"? Unfortunately, the laws are written to require everything on the car to operate but really that includes many aspects of a vehicle that have nothing to do with safety.

Finished up installing the other two struts and the WRX rear sway today. Started yesterday over at my GF's brothers house in his heated garage. Got the drivers side two done and disconnected the rear sway bar but a little too much partying left me completely incapable of completing the job. My initial assessment of just the right side struts being blown was inaccurate as ALL FOUR of the struts were blown!

Install went pretty much without a hitch. I couldn't find my spring compressor tool so I had to pick up a different style from CarQuest that totally SUCKED. Made the job take 10x longer than it should have. Changing out the springs to WRX units didn't help either since I had to compress 8 springs in total. Impact would have made the job quicker but neither of ours were working properly. My forearms are huge now (flex).

I really don't have anything to compare a before and after with since the stock struts were blown but the GR2's feel great. I'm disappointed in the WRX springs as there was only a very little drop in the ride height. I compared the height of the WRX springs next to the stock OBS springs and there was very little difference in the height of the springs. Also the diameter of the coil and the number of coils were exact to the stockers. Guess I was expecting a little more from the WRX springs but plenty for now.

After a quick spin, it needs a bigger front sway and an even bigger rear sway. Alignment on Monday morning...

Not having a swaybar is no more of a safety concern than an oversized sway bar.
