The dealers live and work in the US - so do the mechanics, and the assembly plant workers (many 'foreign' cars are assembled here). The taxes from the sale of these vehicles go to the US, the US residents are the ones that benefit from driving the new cars.
That said, I would argue that Honda, Toyota, and Hyundai have been producing higher-quality compact, inexpensive cars for many years...and the US hasn't. If this "free market" economy that we live in is to be trusted, then we can rest assured that the public is going to buy the best vehicle they can afford. If those best vehicles are foreign, isn't it the fault of the domestic producers for not putting out better vehicles?
I mean, we all drive freakin' Subarus
I say all of this with love, as I wouldn't want politics to come between my car nerd friends and me!
