Catalyst Not Ready

katnip

the car is black. I swear
what the ()&(*&% does that mean? the CEL's have been cleared for nearly 800 miles and yet the OBDII inspection test fails for the "catalyst not ready" and they can't explain what that means! Just take it to a subaru dealer?

FYI the car has a random tech hi flow cat, that has passed the OBDII testing for the last 3 years.

thoughts?????

from a quick search: "clearing the CEL's did cause the reset and like you have all said it will need to be cycled till there back to ready"

now, after 800 miles i could only assume you've done enough cycles to clear it.

the car has been retested 3 times since the code item was repaired (bad wiring to the fuel pressure control solenoid)

originally Al thought it was because they were testing the car cold (open-loop) so I warmed her up real good this morning and took it down for a closed loop test, FAIL!!!!!!!!!!

My car didn't fail, but my Readiness Monitors are not set. How can I set them?

There are many reasons the monitors could be set to "not ready". Usually this is caused by routine maintenance. For instance, if the battery is disconnected for any reason, the monitors of most vehicles are reset. Also, a service technician may have to reset them as part of the repair process. Generally, the car must be driven to reset the monitors. Some manufacturers advertise driving procedures while others do not. The vehicle manufacturer or a qualified service technician is the best source for this information.

now I told them I had just changed the alternator due to failure, but I ahve driven the car over 100 miles since.

So do they check it with the engine on, or off? Because with my engine running, even at temp my scangauge says -NOT READY-. But with my engine off it says -READY-

I hope I don't fail inspection because of that...

Yea, While working as a Service Writer for the past few months, I saw plenty of this. Some cars cycle through in 20 miles, others, it seems to take forever. I had one vehicle that took almost 1k miles to reset, and three visits to the shop. Frustrating as can be, but nothing that can be done about it but driving it. This should only happen after a check engine light is cleared, and is waiting for all the moniters run and pass.

and that is why I am keeping the fail slips in the pass seat and handing them over every time I get pulled over for a "fail" sticker on the car!, I'm gonna need a file folder soon:mad:

try to really cycle it over the next couple days. off/on a lot, a lot of 0-60ish runs, immediate braking. basically drive like an asshat

*I checked out your computer, everything is spliced in, not a true piggy back, the aftermarket box is in the right kick panel, I'm leaving it alone....for now.

*Checked that front 02 connector, seems too loose, the cam lock is ineffective.

*Cleared the memory, then my scanner wouldn't talk to it, then after a drive to the top of the lot and back it did talk to it. OBD2 Self testing/monitors started right away. All good except evap, o2, and catalyst incomplete after drive up to the top of the lot and back.

*Went thru your lingerie drawer, naughty.

*Confirmed there is a reflash concerning the front o2 sensor, "reflash then replace front sensor", the one with the chip. Subaru not reflashing fridays at 3pm??

didn't realize it was spliced in, sorry.

thanks for tackling this.

inski, did a ****e ton of work to my car. THANK YOU!!!!!

systems still screwed up, I am under order to drive it:banana: to see if the systems will straighten out.

so I picked the car up last night and drove home.

start heading up the hill out of Gorham (Route 2)

near the top start smelling ?hot rubber?

stop at rest area on the back side of hill,

all tires evenly cool, check

smell from under the hood, check

to dark to see anything, check

call hubby, tell him car running fine, not hot, smell ?rubber? smell

get instructed to "Drive 'er, just be careful"

roll on, taking it easy and hand on shifter ready to hit neutral should I hear a belt let go

smell gone, until I hit another mountain to climb and its back

park it in the driveway, deal with tomorrow!

hubby reviewed tonight, belt tight, no belt dust

instructed to check what inski installed (front o2) to make sure nothing dislodged or hanging on exhaust, since only smelled under load when exhaust is hot

find: lots of wet goop all over the new O2, back of the engine and the exhaust

any guesses? (yes I know what it is)
