Cell phone service?

obviously i'm going to be a homer, but iPhone has sold nearly 7 million, so it's not like i'm alone

att and verizon have IDENTICAL rate plans. anyone saying different does not work day in and day out with cell rate plans.

the mytouch is cool, i can get down with android. i just like the ipod and other applications for the iphone better. as of this point i would get one of these 3 phones:

iPhone 3gs

Mytouch

Palm Pre

The pre is pretty sick, the only problem is it's a phone backed from 1) a hardware company that was all but dead a year ago in Palm and 2) a cell company that carries a lot of dead weight that might not exist in 2 years. Their $99 simply everything plan is probably the best possible value. it's also their last ditch effort to get new customers, and somehow they're still losing them at record pace

the mytouch is what it is. an iphone competitor that runs an open platform. it's fun, it's quality, and tmobile has good low rate plans, however with something like a mytouch the plans are probably right in line with the other majors

the iphone has a couple huge advantages. price is one. for 99 bucks you can get the 3g, for 199 you can get the 3gs. support. the applications and accessories for the iphone and mac products in general is just overwhelming. ipod. like it or not, an ipod is easily the best portable music player you can buy. the interface is the best part about it. at this point i have not used a music player as good as it.

verizon has no phones that i would want at the moment. the storm was a giant flop. they do have great service but their plans are the same price as the other majors, aside from the sprint $99 going out of business sale. perhaps a nice blackberry release can save them.

FINALLY. my last point. windows mobile is the worst operating system i've ever used on a phone. it's slow, tedious, and unreliable. i've used every OS possible except android and i can't say enough bad things about windows.

End results:

1) iPhone

2a) Pre

2b) myTouch

All of these would be viable options that I would not make fun of you for.

And if i hear the phrase "iPhone killer" again i'll go insane. The fact that companies have admitted the iPhone is what to gun for should tell you enough. The first time that phrase was used was for the goddamn LG voyager. what a piece of crap that was.

Hey man no hard feelings

THANKS GUYS! oops caps i have a lg rumor right now with sprint, it has better reception then the pre so that is already out. i had one for 4 days and returned it. i can drive all the way home with my rumor and not drop or get muddy and the pre got muddy 3 or 4 times and dropped 3 calls before i stoppped trying. although sprint does by far have the best plan i think. verison doesn't have any phones i liked, tmobile has phones but coverage doesn't look as good. trust me ive hated att for a long time but i haven't use them for 4 years so i cant really hold a grudge anymore, i know lots of people that are happy with them. i would get a 3gs if i get one. no need to get heated over this but i do understand everyone has their fav's. funny tho nobody has said stay with sprint

Has anyone looked at the Omnia on Verizon? Is there some reason why none of you would think about that as a good choice?

I haven't found anything wrong with it, so I'm just curious.

hey i said sprint has an awesome plan and a cool phone!!
haha, but here's good news for those with verizon, or for those who need it for their good service coverage:

http://gizmodo.com/5367907/why-verizons-probably-still-getting-the-pre

for those who get a boner for us cellular's coverage, verizon roams on most if not all of their towers.
Some android phones are going to drop on verizon too. Verizon has a fun history of crippling phones with their half baked firmware (not that ATT has never done that, Nokia E62 or N75) so we'll see how it goes. I personally don't like verizon

the only time I recommend them is when people are calling other folks on verizon a lot and they'd benefit from unlimited mobile to mobile, that and coverage area.

As for the Omina, I know very little about VZW phones, I likes my GSM and sim cards too much.

mark i had the pre for a few days, not happy at all. you cant text without misspelling something and i have smaller hands. i also get little to zero reception at work and everyone else is walking around everywhere with there phones verizon att and tmobile...i like the looks of the htc hero

From Verizon:

The Samsung Omnia™ is the all–in–one mobile device that helps keep even the busiest life in balance. This advanced, touch screen smartphone offers the very best in features and functionality – all accessed through a full–sized, customizable touch display with drag and drop Widgets. The Omnia is like a PC in your pocket, fully loaded with Windows

Im sorry man but I dont think a lot of us are big fans of windows mobile.

That's it for me. Not a fan of winmo/vzw. Granted I haven't tried the omina, the winmo tag never got me excited, plus again, I'm a huge fan of the flexibility of GSM over CDMA.

At the next meet I'll let people try out my G1 if folks let me try their phones.

In other news: Google just cease and desisted the most popular modder for android and the community is blowing up over it. If anyone wants more info/cares, PM/email/IM me about it so we don't crap up this poor little thread.

Ah, I guess that makes sense. Just didn't realize why no one liked a phone with such nice features.

im going to go into every store and touch everything everyone has suggested. do cell phone carriers have a test drive policy? if not they should that way you can use there phone and service for a week and go everywhere you go to make sure it works

I believe us and verizon have 30 day trial periods.

US Cellular has the 30 day policy too, I've had US Cellular for the past 5 years and never had a problem with them, my mom had verizon and always paid too much and had crappy service, I put her on my plan and she is 100% happier now. Just my opinion, but look into US Cellular.

Honestly US cellular is a good choice. I've never talked to anyone who hasn't liked them. I can say that as a customer rep I hear everything about all companies and Sprint sorry for anyone has the worst everything... They are basically not going to be around in a while... Rumour has it and this is just rumour but Tmobile may be in discussion with taking over sprint in a year or so
