Seriously, huge success. Also, NYC is awesome.

1 Tank of gas to/from Spfld MA. (parked at mom's house)

  • $30 (Drove her Jetta)
2 Tickets Spfld >> NYC Port Authority and back.

  • $12 (Greyhound special)
2 Subway rides to and from Coney Island

  • $7
2 Subway rides to and from SoHo

  • $7
Dinner at Hard Rock Cafe

  • $60 (including tip)
Hotel room at Radisson Lexington (5-7 minute walk from Times Square)

  • $108
Cab rides from Port Authority and back from Hotel

  • $24
Otherwise the only spending was various food stands here and there and a pizza place in Soho. It was a hell of a lot of fun, we did everything we wanted to do and by some miracle it was cheap cheap cheap.

not getting mugged or picking up a std........... priceless
i didn't once feel uncomfortable throughout 2 days of walking throughout the city. granted i stayed in tourists areas, but why wouldn't it? we plan on going again in the next couple months to check out some things we missed. i feel more creeped out walking through portland late night sometimes than i did in NYC.

My dad took the train from Portland to NY because he was unhappy with our most recent airplane flight. It ended up being more expensive and more trouble than flying/driving.

He had to take a taxi from the Boston-Maine station and the Boston-New York station...

NYC is nice in some areas, do not mess with the rough parts of town. I have a few friends that live down there, here's my favorite story. He calls and asks how to get blood out of clothes. I ask why? Well he was leaving a bar and the guy standing next to him got shot and the blood apparently got all over him. The guy took both their wallets but didnt shoot my buddy (no idea why). Pretty sweet.

Portland has its areas, but generally I've walked all over it at all hours of the night and never had a problem. Course some of my mouthy friends have had problems walking even in the old port.

BTW NYC trip sounds sweet. I've gotta get down there for Giants game this season.

about the creeped out comment i made. istayed well within the perfectly acceptable areas, i can't see why i would go anywhere else. so in those areas i can't imagine having any problems. i like portland, don't get me wrong, but living on sherman st for a year can do a lot to kill some of the magic of it.

My eldest daughter lives in Queens and comutes everywhere via subway or bus. Just don`t be in the wrong place at the wrong time and you`ll live.

I'm not a big fan of the area between congress and 295. That's like portland's anus. Pretty small anus for a city suburban area this size though.

This is awesome. I am going to do this sometime this summer for sure. We should all go down together next time Mark.

the lady friend and I have been trying to plan a good trip down there for awhile now. Thanks for the info!

I've been to NYC, and I honestly went with a sheltered and naive mentality that everyone there was going to be an a-hole and try to mug me. I couldn't have been more wrong. Everyone was exceptionally helpful, especially for us being obvious tourists. Definitely going back. Just to visit though - I'm a New England dude.

NYC is a blast. that's awesome you made it back with money to spare! If you plan it out the $$ part it isn't so bad. I guess i have to get better at planning
