engine replacement.

ok so long story short, the engine is running, noisy and old. 166k on the 02 wrx.

so i am thinking about replacing it soon, as to prevent it leaving me stranded.

now..the infamous legacy twin turbo motors....they are cheap as all hell on ebay, now if i abandoned the twin turbo setup and use my original setup, could this be used as a suitable replacement for the wrx?

basically i want the long block everyhting else will be stripped down and swapped over.

they are both ej20t motors right? the TT has turbo proven internals. should work no?

Figure out the crank postion differences. Subaru throws curveballs at us and change around the hall-effect notches once in awhile, bastids. Then buy a head gasket for the both and see if they are the same.

+1 for factory shortblock. same $ as used motor, minus the question marks.

but run the old one until it croaks first

might surprise you and last a long time

so what if it clatters a leetle? that's what Lucas Oil Treatment is for! (seriously)

Also, pull the timing covers. It may be the tensioner hitting on the bracket or an idler pulley. Ask Mightysubie on that one. It's worth a look...

Joel... come on. Everyone knows those tensioners never fail... :

I vote for the 2.5 Esss Teee Eye block. Sounds like a nice project for a wagon such as yours. It seems the remainder of the car is in decent condition, no? If you've got all the running gear taken care of, I'd say GO 4 IT!

that ej20h TT longblock is gonna be a mega pain in the ass with your harness.

so why not pick up one of the several 2.0 blocks for sale on nabisco, or rebuild the block you have? grab a 257 crank and internals for cheap and make your own 2.3 engine... and would prolly be cheaper that a motor swap anyway.

if you go with a 2.5 block, you're td04 is gonna feel like ass.

if you enjoy a running engine, stay the hell away from that sh%*!

it foams up.

bad.

foam is teh motor death.

ask me how i know.

stick to EJ20 short block, the 2.5 block needs lots of other upgrades to work right (turbo, EM, harness diffs, etc etc). crate block for my rebuild was like $1800, it was sealed in plastic, crated beautifully and looked super sexay when built up.

if you have spun bearings, make super sure you get the oil pump cleaned out extra good. ditto oil pan, ditto oil journals in heads cams etc

KISS

nothing that serious yet.

its a cold start noise more like a soft rapping noise but goes away after its completely warmed up. im thinking its time to peek at that tensioner and get one one of those Tomei belts and do the job.

it does have 166k on the odo and to be honest..the last 25k haven't been the easiest miles she has seen.

i love having a degree in automotive tech and have to pay people to do work on my car. fudge i need a garage.

that sounds more like typical Subie cold startup valve clatter. if noise goes away when warm, it don't really count

bad bottom end goes clunk cloink clonk at low revs...sounds really nassty.

I hear what regashii sez about lucas oil treatment...if you use as much as they want you to, I'd be worried as well

BUT have used like half a quart mixed in with reg oil tho...improves oil cling and really quiets startup valve noise

used so far in Leg GT, 2.5RS street n rally cars, bugeye wag's fresh motor, and Miata, whose hyraulic lash adjusters are notoriously clack-clakky on startup. half a bottle of lucas shut em up totally, even after sitting all winter.

160k you got me beat by 5 k my motor spun a rod. but i'm going to pick up at ej207 V7 instead of V8 thought about a rebuild myself but i am going to use my old motor as spair as a project some day. The Go big or Go Home theroy was in use and in effect for me....

guess i'm convince to choose another route... ej207 failed... so taking Joel advice and build a fresh engine ..spent enough on Hoed out engines/cars.......

easy way isn't the best way....so i guess i'll build next month.... only thing i'm worried is first 1000 miles... once its done...break in procedures differ from mechanics.....
