Rear mounted turbos are nothing new, and they actually work. They are less efficient than a front mounted turbo, but they keep space free, and heat down in the engine bay. A rather small turbo is typically used to keep lag down due to the long distance from the intake.

 
That's a company that makes them. That one looks like a custom fab job, but they're going for the same thing. Their tailpipe would actually look pretty good if they ground the welds flush, they did a pretty good job on it.

 
So I see the turbo, but I don't see where it pushes the air... Those two pipes have to be exhaust to the turbo, then exhaust out the back, right?

Doesn't the turbo have to force air into the engine? Wouldn't it be harder to get the air to the engine from the back of the car rather than right next to the engine?

Please teach me the ways of the turbo *bow*

Yes it would be a lot of piping to get the air to the engine.

If you look at the picture, you can see that there is paper towel shoved in the compressor side of the turbo. It isn't connected up to the engine yet.

 
The system works well on large V8s that don't really have a problem with low end, and are looking for a litle boost on the high end. Turbo lag isn't really a problem for those engines, so the efficiency of the turbo isn't very worrysome.

It's not really harder to get the air back up to the front, it just takes longer, and isn't as efficient. It won't spool as quickly, and won't have the same boost pressure that the same turbo mounted up near the engine will have. But like I said, not a problem for the engines that application was designed for.
