OF course I was going at a pretty good clip, couldn't stop in time not to alarm it and certainly blew ANY photo op I may have had.... but FINALLY I have officially seen a moose.

The wife and I were riding the ATV's yestersday when I came across said animal in question standing on the side of the trails. I skidded to a stop and got to watch him walk into the woods and dissapear.... I didn't have a chance to grab the camera from my pocket and remove it from the ziplok baggy it was in before he was gone.

At least I can finally say that moose DO in fact exist in this state on something other than road signs, bumper stickers and that silly but HUGE wooden statue in my town...yay.

Ive seen a few moose up north. I am wondering if I will ever come across a bear though...do they exist?

I think they do as well as a few other critters based on evidence we have seen... I have been out on the ATV's with friends who hunt, they have happily identified bear and "cat" dookies in the woods.. I have also listened to what I think it the unmistakable sounds of a fisher cat snarling at something around the perimeter of my property but I am not 100%

We also spotted a great white buffalo, a 2" Northeast Anaconda and the occasional homeless PITA member foraging for food. (srr any PITA folk in the room)

Yea be glad you saw the moose in the woods on an atv and not while your doing 75 in your car down a backroad that's when most people see them, or not. Ive seen a fisher cat once at my parents most likely because they have 4 cats. Weird looking little thing kinda cute but very vicious.

At Pedro's house!

Hence why I slept on his floor instead of in a tent

I have seen a handful. Father in lay just him one with his F-250, not as much damage as I would of thought, but he just clipped him. If it was my car, it would of been totaled.

Moose are all over. One of my daughters totaled her little Escort around 10 years ago on 109 in Wells right around the entrance to 95 when one came out into the middle of the road. The mooses shoulder drove the roof back but fortunately she walked away unhurt. The cop upon checking my daughter out noticed her registration expired a day before and gave her a ticket

I went to court with her and got it dismissed.

Just wait till a bear comes to your front door as one did about a year ago. The dogs went wild

My 95 year old neighbors family used to own all the land around this side of the lake, she still thinks its all her back yard.:iam:For entertainment purposes she says she likes to [in my best yankee accent]" feed the crittaas round the faarmm":D not just sond birds like most people but turkeys and owls, she buys dog food for the deer and had 3 bears on her back porch 2 springs ago[without freaking out]

In this small pocket of land, we have a very diverse circle of life still carrying on right out behind the house.....Enjoy your moose bro:D

moose aren't everywhere, hearing of the motorcycle collision recently is startling. I keep an eye on weather before wilderness riding, there is a time they commonly move...anyhoo,

My own encounter with a moose was chasing one (not fast, more following) in katahdin iron works with an old IH scout about 20 years ago. The moose. they fear steel with real density, everything else is a tin can to step in front of and annhilate you and your pansy car.

I think they know tractor trailers have bouncy fiberglass front ends and think..."that is Nothing". Drive a 4000 pound scout and send them running...we don't see what they do, but i learned a few guesses. no animal is dumb. ever.

Take Rt. 17 to Rangeley then get on Rt. 16 across to Kingfield some evening, hit 16 around 6-7pm and they will be out feeding. The Stratton end has a small D.O.T. garage on the left almost to the village you can pull in there and there is a bog down over the bank and you will see a few. Barb and I go for rides sometimes on our nights off and head up to watch them.

rofl adam...

I was out on Rte 66 (the ATV trail that covers several towns round here).. we were of all places right near the "park and ride" entrance on Rte 17...not all the way to Rangely.. we are still trying to find an open trail up there but we are getting close...we were pretty close to long pond in I think Houghton where I said moose in question.

Ever eat at the front porch cafe in Dixfield?

i have yet to see a bear in this state, but i can tell you first hand, there is a female moose, and her yearling milling around in the yard here, scaring the holy carp outta the dogs. they dont even bark at it....... they just stare at it lol.

I once fed a young bull moose near Lobster Lake, which is northeast of Moosehead Lake. I fed it a carrot.

When I used to 4 wheel Jeeps I stopped for a break and looked down over a bank and there was mama bear and cub, this brave soul jumped back in the vehicle, 15-20 feet to close for me with no sidearm.

so... what do U do to a bear with a sidearm beside make it madd? unless of course UR Clint Eastwood and ur Sidearm is seven feet long or U have klyde to help U fight it off.

Adam we took UR advice and headed up Rte 17 for a while and also did Rte 26 north through grafton state park then banged a right hand turn on East B Hill Road to get back to the Andover area and home.

PS: we are no where as close as it seems in these photo's. The woman was using her Cannon EOS with a 300 zoom/macro lens contraption on it whilst sticvking her head through the sunroof.
