i drive in cumberland almost everyday and haven't gotten a ticket in over 5 years. i get pulled over about once a month for silly little things because yes, as you said, the cops are bored. the thing is that if you treat them like people instead of 'cops' they'll treat you like a person instead of a 'suspect'.
i got pulled over about a month ago by a cop sitting in an intersection late at night here in cumberland.
he asked if i had ever been pulled over for my exhaust before (invidia race-back),
i said yeah, about a month ago.
he said upon looking at it closer it looks like a solid piece and he had pulled me over because it sounded like it was a cut off exhaust.
i said no, its full stainless but i need it to support proper power levels and unfortunately that comes with excess noise.
he gave me back my license and let me be on my way without even a warning.
as for non-cumberland cops i got pulled over 2-3 months ago for doing 55-60 through the windham rotary (35 zone) with a cop RIGHT behind me. i calmly told him the truth, in the dark his car looks similar to a coworker of mine who often follows me home. i assumed it was him tailgating me because he wanted me to speed up to get home quicker. again he let me go w/o a warning.
my g/f's father is a cop in freeport. hes told me many first hand stories of drivers he pulled over with the intention of just warning them, once he found out they were a dick he kept them there for 20 min and gave them a ticket for everything he could think of.
i wouldnt call it catching a break, i would call it being civil to another human being, not looking down at them and getting the same in return from them.
and yes, being humane is one of the things i'm successful at. i'll spare you by not listing the rest of those things.
