alright so i got an hks cat back and have had it for a couple months never been bothered or anything especially in sanford i drove by cops all the time and have never gotten pulled over by them but last night i got pulled over for my exhaust in north berwick i was going 30 through the town on rt 4 which was the speed limit and he followed me from the train tracks to just before the border line in sanford and pulled me over saying my exhaust was excessive and he said he heard me backfire which i didnt hear at all and whenever my car does backfire i always hear it but i dont see why he pulled me over for my exhaust. Anyone with an hks been pulled over for their exhaust?

its not like i go around romping on my car so that the exhaust is loud he was giving me crap about people in the neighborhood sleeping and that they probably dont want to hear my car driving by

What time last night??? Some cops (with nothing better to do) might use a loud exhaust as an excuse to pull you over to check if you were having a little too much fun on your Saturday night.

you just hung yourself in your own thread.

get a hollowed out resonator, or fast baffled one, that is all the subers need to stop the popping. I even mader one for a non-airbypassed subae out of a glasspack shortened and packing removed.

the police would rather pull over something elsebesides loud exhaust, he really got you for real.

a non-airbypassed sube simply means carbed. My own popped with a full chambered muffler.. the injected subes, and turbo subes actually have to work thier way into such a silly error, they all got bypasses to stop throttle off surge, compression..it is to say, a backfiring sube is way unnecessary today more than ever. just spend the 12 dollars and fix it.

???So you want him to cut is HKS exhaust and put a glass pack in it??? BTW most exhausts have expansion chambers/res built in.

The backfire is caused by excess fuel which happens in off throttle situations.

To the op... what is the db rating on your exhaust? If it is 95 db or under it is fine. Get it certified. I carry a db meter with me.

Most officers don't know the exhaust law nor do they know the subsection of the law which allows for 95 db and under if the exhuast is not stock. Best bet if you got a ticket is to get it tested... next best thing after if you don't pass is to just drive until you get another ticket. a lot of cops don't bother to learn or care about it and think that it is their word over yours... protect yourself and test it to make sure it is legit.

a state trooper pulled me over once for my exhaust. i was in a tunnel, and romping on it.

fought the ticket, told the judge i had an exhaust leak at the time, and had it repaired in the meantime. some sort of receipt helps. charge dismissed.

yeah, what pat said. my excuse is always "it took a sticker at the dealer like this" but mine's pretty quiet compared to some of you i've heard

I was pulled over like 3 times with my TXS RFL. I then left my car complety catless. Have catless header, catless uppipe, catless DP, catless exhaust. I just put on Turbo XS standard muffler instead of there RFL muffler and havnt been bothered at all.

Also, I just had my car inspected and Lee's Tire (which is known to be very strict) didn't even say anything for me be 100% catless.

All of those towns in way southern maine, the cops have nothing better to do. They pulled me over fir the same reason and I told him I just got it stickered like a week before like this, which i did, and he didn't give me a ticket but i sure pissed him off because you couldn't do anything about it, lol. Cops down there.....I could say some pretty dirty things lol

That just means they can go after the inspection station. No vehicle may be operated with an exhaust that emits more sound than the original exhaust.

Basically everyone here with an exhaust mod is riding illegal then!

Sometimes I feel sorry for you Adam because you have to listen to the cop comments. But I have to say, you handle it very well. Kudos to you!

Your right Mike they are, yes it is crazy but that's what the lawmakers have written not us cops but we get the hassle. to me our cars sound good but modified is illegal which as I said I don't agree with especially with friggen Harley's making twice as much noise but the big wigs that make the laws are also the ones that probably have them.

CHECK THE SUBSECTION OF THE LAW!!! It states...

6. Exception.

Subsections 1 and 3 do not apply to a muffler or exhaust system that does not emit noise in

excess of 95 decibels as measured in accordance with standards and specifications outlined in standard J1169

adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers in May 1998. A person served with a Violation Summons and

Complaint charging a violation of subsection 1 or 3 must provide satisfactory evidence that the muffler or exhaust

system does not emit a noise in excess of 95 decibels as measured in accordance with standards and specifications

outlined in standard J1169

adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers in May 1998. Measurements must be

made by participating certified inspection stations.

the entire inspection law-

I got mine tested (and failed) at Neil's Motors in Biddeford. No hassles, no problems, let me know what I had to do to be legal. I would def. recomend you go there.

selectively enforced law, it's all up to the officer whether to make an issue or not.

subies with loud exhausts are CLASSIC profile to get pulled over, the later at nite it is the more likely to get stopped.

sux but true -- we be profiled!

I got pulled over last Wednesday on 95 by a statey for my exhaust on my WRX. He asked if i had proof that it was under 95db, i didn't, so he gave me a ticket. Getting it tested this week.
