Gotcha, you Best Buy BEEEAAATCH!

So I've decided one way to boost Redline income is to create a completely mobile setup (Power inverter, collapsable tables, EZ up, and accept Credit Cards via Paypal processing) so I can create on-demand magnets and other vinyl needs for Auto-X's and Rally-X's.

So I shot over to Best Buy last night to pickup a lower-end laptop ($500-ish) that would take care of what I needed. Of course, they come 'pre-installed' with Vista ( >

) which is going to take some getting used to. Can you believe it occupies over 500MB of RAM resource??

Anyhow, Best Buy guy didn't have the answers to my questions of compatibility, so we mosied on over to the Geek Squad desk. Picture 2 BB guys, plus a GS guy, talking to me, answering my questions. Of course, this is in the customer service line - with about 4-5 other people nearby waiting for service. There I am, conversing with 2 goons and a geek, inquiring what I need to do in order to get my Adobe CS1 and my Scanvec Flexi 7.6 installed. They 'check their compatibility chart' and tell me neither software is going to work. So I ask what would happen if I formatted the laptop and installed XP. "DON'T!" was their answer, due to 'missing driver' issues. So I asked if the laptop had System Restore discs so that I could roll-back the installation if XP didn't work.

Their reply: "For an additional $49.99, you can purchase the restore discs." Keep in mind, I was in the CS line, with others customers there. I responded "You're kidding, right? Those discs used to be included no charge, as something to fall back on. To sell them as an option is completely rediculous. Those cost you guys what... $8 bucks to make? Forget it, I'll be making a set myself, just for spite." Their faces fell and got worried there were other clients nearby. All of a sudden, the price for the discs was $19.99...

[insert pelvic thrusts here]

Then, I get home with my new laptop, discs included. I install Flexi just for ha ha's... installs fine. USB protection key (dongle) wouldn't get recognized though. Go to the dev's website, and there's a 64-bit driver! WOOT. 1 down, 1 to go. Install Adobe CS1 (just Illustrator) and it blows up. Grrrr. Patches applied, reset software installation... voila.

P.S. Storyland will be our Guinea Pig. ;D

That's pretty harsh... LOL.

No, I'll stick up for them on that. They do _FOR THE MOST PART_ know what they are doing... _MOSTLY_

Dont both with Rom Raider. It doesn't work for a raisin on Vista. I actually like vista just fine...except for the fact that i have to keep my old laptop around for Subaru stuff.

I've had no problems with Rom Raider and Vista very limited usage though.

No problem with the service or ridiculous fees, people can spend their money how they want. I do have a problem with the fact that they have a whole little script they follow to try to not let you say no and that is just one more time I have to interrupt the sales person like a jerk to tell them I'm not interested rather than waiting for their minute long speech to end.

I need to call 'em up again because I see my new TV has dropped in price yet again... WOOT! Not as drastic as the $472 i got back last time I called them but hell, another $60 is fine by me.

It amazes me that they price guarantee LCD's for 90 days.

what did you get?

It's funny, one of our clients is Redhat Software.... and the building is built extremely well, and there's actually quite a few female software developers there. Whether they are married or in a serious relationship.... no idea.

if you don't like geek talk, get out.

I am going to be *hopefully* converting to Linux this year. I have had nothing but problems with Winders. especially with notebooks.

The biggest issue that I have with Microsoft is that they have the capability to make a bare-bones, tiny OS that would allow the damn computer to do it's friggen job without occupying system resources like a friggen pig. But no... they make a overweight, useless bells & whistles OS that requires 512mb of RAM just to turn the damn PC on.
