Head swap questions

Soon I will be swapping WRX heads, intake mani, wiring and ecu into my 22t swapped GC. My question is if there is anything in particular I should do while I have the motor out and the heads off? I'll be getting a new timing belt and gaskets, but are there any little things that might be easy to do while I have everything apart?

Thanks!

clutch, pitch stopper upgrade, GpN motor/trans mounts, fresh rad hoses, full block reseal kit if you have heads apart too

(heh, easy for me to spend YOUR $$$)

Clutch was just replaced when I swapped the tranny not too many miles ago ... haven't driven it much since. I have the GrpN motor mounts, but I think I'll skip on the tranny mounts for now. A lot of the hoses are fresh as I had to replace them already. Block reseal kit consists of?

lap the valves if needed....
What's this?

talk to Lobstah. He did Ryans on his swap and did a pretty good job of it. NAPA sells lapping compound. You basicly use it to help take the minor imperfections out between the valve and valve seat. You would do this if your engine had a crappy leakdown out of the intake or exhaust ports due to not sealing correctly. So a valve lapp would not fix a bent valve or stem or springs. Sorry to state the obvious but had to otherwise someone would ask.

dammit Chris, i was just gonna advise Tyler to use some peanut butter before lapping

So what does that involve? Something you could help me with? How much does the required stuff cost?

first see if your car needs this done. Like I said a leakdown test would tell you. then you do the work based upon what you find. But like Lobstah said just some oil valve guide seals. shouldnt cost to much at EG.

I think I was told I want the 22t head gaskets ... but I was thinking and that doesn't seem right. The heads on the WRX have a bigger area where the valves are ... wouldn't the smaller head gasket block that a little bit? Maybe I would need the WRX one ...

this kind of parts mix n matching requires specialized knowlege and experience. you need to make sure the new heads and head gaskets have exactly the same patterns for coolant and oil passages. seek detailed advice from somebody who's done this before, it'll save you tons of time and having to do the job 2-3 times while working bugs out of the learning curve.

Remember -- "Subies are like Legos...'Cept when thay ain't"

I know they do NOT have the same pattern, but they overlap enough to have enough cooling. It's been done many times before ... I guess I just need to find out what everyone else has used. How are the STi gaskets compared to the 2.0 WRX gaskets? Assuming the STi gaskets worked, they would lower the compression, yes?
