Hey from Yarmouth!

With problems going into reverse I would say its been beat on a bit. My car was before I got it and reverse doesn't stay engaged. I would seriously think about Pedro's WRX if I were you. A WRX in highschool does seem like overkill, Matt's RS would make many people jealous, maybe more so then a WRX.

Stock 2.0 wrx's are slow, barely faster than a regular 2.5.  I think he can handle it. 

 
Still only 230hp, it's fast, but not that fast.  People tend to think WRX's are some untamed beast that does wheelies and is completely uncontrollable. I've never been really impressed with stock performance.  I've seen grandma's driving fxt's that have the same stock hp rating, and they somehow stay on the road.  Is it more than what teenager needs for a first car?  Maybe, but if Nate's brother is anything like Nate, I'm sure he's overly responsible.  Plus 230hp is like Accord level...

Thanks for all the warm welcomes everyone! and for all of the great feedback. I think I'm still going to pursue this car, but there is no way I'm settling for more than 11k. That would be simply a ridiculous amount of money to spend. Plus, as has been eluded to, for a high school students first car, even 10k is a pretty penny to pay for a car.

I've always put my car into 2nd, then reverse just to make sure it doesn't make that god awful crunch. There's nothing wrong with my trans, I think the syncros on old subies are just hyper sensitive.

Oh and welcome young one! My opinion is that you buy a car that is easy and cheap to fix, whatever that is. Good luck on your hunt!

you are correct. it will need a timing belt, water pump and clutch right off so make sure you factor that into your price. clutches for those cars are not cheap either since it has a dual mass flywheel that cannot be resurfaced.
