High idle, slow revving down.

YARRR SUBY MONSTER!!
I posted a while ago about this issue, but I can't find the thread. And last time my car was randomly running open loop randomly. this time???

So here are my symptoms.

As long as you don't get smoke coming out of the filler cap you are ok. You should feel puffs of air coming from the filler cap. Just as long of its not puffs of smoke.

Could it be the throttle position sensor sticking?

My scangauge2 shows 0 at no throttle, and 99 at full throttle. Like it always has. So I tend to think it isn't that. I could still test the resistance of the actual sensor to make sure the computer isn't just doing something weird.

Just trying to throw some ideas out there for you. What about the mass airflow sensor or maf whichever one you have. If it was reading incorrectly then it would get the engine revved alittle from incorrect reading.

How did I forget about the MAF? THAT WAS IT! Gave it a good dousing of carb cleaner and now my car runs great again!!! WOO! thanks so much. I was hoping it would be something stupid.

Ok, so I spoke to soon. It ran wonderfully for about 10 miles. Then it started revving down slow again, came to a stop sign and it idles at 900RPMs. Cleaned the MAF again, nothing. Reset the computer, still an issue. And it has developed a new problem. I'll be driving along in any gear at a constant speed and it starts bucking and jerking. It happened 3 times, in 1st, 3rd, and 4th. I immediately push in the clutch and let off the gas. The engine will hover between 1500 and 2000 RPMs for a few secs, then drop to 900. And be OK afterwards.

So I'm really not sure what's up. Could the MAF be dying all together? What else should I look for?

DING DING. I do believe your MAF has decided to take a big ol' shizen. Junk yard near you? Try to see if there is and if they have a car like yours in it. Or Subie dealership with a MAF. But, no doubt that is going to cost your though.

Sometimes they just cann't be cleaned you know.

I'll check to see what other subys have compatible MAFs and look at junk yards around me. Hopefully they'd let me take the MAF for a test drive to see if it solves the issue. Or I could just get a new one at a subaru dealer to see if that's the problem, if it is. just return it and seek a junk yard with one for cheaper.

I wish I was back home for this, Norm's would let me test out a used one to see if that solved it. Anyway, I'll see what I can find and get back with news.

Yup keep us up to date. I am sure it is the problem. If the car is acting up you pull the maf and clean it and then it runs like a champ then gives up the ghost again, by deductive reason it tells you that something is going on that is not right there.

kinda sounds like a head gasket on its way out to me... but could def be the maf/ICV/Distributor (other ignition parts)... Check for coolant loss.

Hmm, it could be the IACV, no idea how to check it... anyone?

If something needs replacing I hope it's the MAF because that's easiest.

I have new plugs and wires about 15k miles ago, but I guess the coil could be going bad :/ No misfires though, at least, not bad enough for a CEL...

I highly doubt it's the HG. The oil is fine, haven't lost any since the last change 2500 miles ago, coolant looks just as green and poisonous as it did 10k miles ago when the motor was pulled. And if it's a HG I'm effed ....

How would I check the IACV or coil?

Got some advise from a local PA member on LGT.com. Went to a pull-it-yourself yard in Allentown, got a MAF from a '95 legacy wagon and it's all happy!
