My understanding is, in all cases, factory installed lights are exempt even if they would normally be illegal. But you still can't use them on the pavement due to other drivers. Obviously the fact that Dan's dad (PapaGak) was stopped for it doesn't scare Dan (RangeleyRallyDG) because he was mentioned at the beggining of this article, being that it is He and Spiller that are looking at doing this.
Also, I have taken note that police will sometime pull you over if they don't like something even if its not illegal. They will give you a warning rather than a ticket to avoid getting them selves in trouble or needing to make thier case it court, but that won't stop them from pulling you over. I have been stopped for "Failure to yield when entering a public way" but I was already on a public way so it was thrown out of court when I fought it, also I have been pulled over for doing 43 in a 45 and was told I was doing 43 in a 25. When I asked the officer to explain why the road could change to a 25mph zone from a 55mph zone and he gave me crap about how a (D.O.T. Urban Compact Zone) sign means 25mph. I said well, the sign 50ft after it says 45mph, and you pulled me over in a 45mph zone. He then started to ask me where I was going, where I was comming from, what "KENWOOD" on the back of windshield meant, if the car was mine, if the computer equipment in the back seat was mine. He was just generally being an asshole for no reason. I wasn't speeding, accelerating or playing my stereo at all. He then went off on a tangent about how I probably didn't notice him because of his fancy new Franklin County unmarked cruiser. I was polite and asked again where I was speeding. He then gave me a warning that said simply "Speed" and didn't sign it, I was driving a 97 Grand Am.
Another time, I floored it in first out of an intersection in kingfield and stopped accelerating once I hit 35, blowing past a Sherrifs Deputy at Annies. He pulled me over for "Embarassing Him" in front of a group of pedestrians. I knew that wouldn't fly so I wasn't too worried. Then he kept giving me crap about accelerating too fast. I remained polite, and waited to see what the ticket would say. He gave me a warning for "Excessive Acceleration" and did not sign it. The next day I looked up the law and found out why. There are no laws pertaining to "Accelerating too Fast". The only reference to excessive acceleration is under the "Excessive Noise" section of the state law. Essentially, he could not ticket me unless I was speeding, squeeling tires, had a loud exhaust or left rubber on the road in relation to the "Excessive Acceleration". He knew it would have been thrown out of court because I did nothing wrong, so they give me a warning with no signature so that I can't complain to thier superiors. And without a ticket I can challenge them in court either, no matter how much I would have loved too after that.
