Light bars, light bars, lightbars.

thanks for the legal research!

based on a quick read of the statues in the links:

no max number of lights, particularly headlights

min 22" max 54" height of headlights

fogs must be mounted below main headlight centers

aux lights can not be brighter than stock headlights (Hella 500s 700s and FF1000s all fit this description with std 55w bulbs)

so your friend's dad evidently got stopped for lights on top of the vehicle....so what do the pp who buy a Jeep Compass or Liberty do...those vehicles have std equip (or factory optional) roof mounted light bars AND they are sold in state of ME ??!!

My understanding is, in all cases, factory installed lights are exempt even if they would normally be illegal. But you still can't use them on the pavement due to other drivers. Obviously the fact that Dan's dad (PapaGak) was stopped for it doesn't scare Dan (RangeleyRallyDG) because he was mentioned at the beggining of this article, being that it is He and Spiller that are looking at doing this.

Also, I have taken note that police will sometime pull you over if they don't like something even if its not illegal. They will give you a warning rather than a ticket to avoid getting them selves in trouble or needing to make thier case it court, but that won't stop them from pulling you over. I have been stopped for "Failure to yield when entering a public way" but I was already on a public way so it was thrown out of court when I fought it, also I have been pulled over for doing 43 in a 45 and was told I was doing 43 in a 25. When I asked the officer to explain why the road could change to a 25mph zone from a 55mph zone and he gave me crap about how a (D.O.T. Urban Compact Zone) sign means 25mph. I said well, the sign 50ft after it says 45mph, and you pulled me over in a 45mph zone. He then started to ask me where I was going, where I was comming from, what "KENWOOD" on the back of windshield meant, if the car was mine, if the computer equipment in the back seat was mine. He was just generally being an asshole for no reason. I wasn't speeding, accelerating or playing my stereo at all. He then went off on a tangent about how I probably didn't notice him because of his fancy new Franklin County unmarked cruiser. I was polite and asked again where I was speeding. He then gave me a warning that said simply "Speed" and didn't sign it, I was driving a 97 Grand Am.

Another time, I floored it in first out of an intersection in kingfield and stopped accelerating once I hit 35, blowing past a Sherrifs Deputy at Annies. He pulled me over for "Embarassing Him" in front of a group of pedestrians. I knew that wouldn't fly so I wasn't too worried. Then he kept giving me crap about accelerating too fast. I remained polite, and waited to see what the ticket would say. He gave me a warning for "Excessive Acceleration" and did not sign it. The next day I looked up the law and found out why. There are no laws pertaining to "Accelerating too Fast". The only reference to excessive acceleration is under the "Excessive Noise" section of the state law. Essentially, he could not ticket me unless I was speeding, squeeling tires, had a loud exhaust or left rubber on the road in relation to the "Excessive Acceleration". He knew it would have been thrown out of court because I did nothing wrong, so they give me a warning with no signature so that I can't complain to thier superiors. And without a ticket I can challenge them in court either, no matter how much I would have loved too after that.

rotflmao....above post is exactly what I meant about "selective enforcement" whether it's lights or speed or courtesy or excessive acceleration or "driving while a teenager"

maybe we should have an anonymous thread about all these sorts of stories. SOmeone I know got pulled over in their WRX because the officer said the hood scoop "obscured their view of the road" another got pulled over 'cause they had a decal on back window "obscuring their view of the road" jayzos!

I don't think I have ever been pulled over for "Driving While a Teenager", lol. I had only been ticketed for speeding twice by the time I was 20. It was after I turned 20 and started modding cars that the police started to give me greef. Since I have turned 20, 8 years ago, I have been ticketed a further 6 times for speeding and Once for Failure to Yield which got thrown out. I have also been pulled over for loud exhaust after blowing a downpipe off. Everything else has been for speeding, and that excessive acceleration warning. I have also had probably 4 or 5 speeding warnings and almost lost my license for getting 2 tickets of 15mph or more in less than a year. I held on to my license by one measly point! Heh. I think I have been pulled over once a year on average since I started driving.

Oh, and BTW, I have never been in trouble for anything other than moving violations in my life. Oh, and I got stopped once for driving with no headlights on in the pouring rain and had my friend's car searched, while we stood in the rain. I was driving and she was a passenger. That was also probably the 3rd time I had been searched. I always let them search my vehicle, but give them crap when they leave it dissaray, which they ussually do.

heh, i got a nice lil present from the Rockport PD on Saturday....seems the inspection on my F-250 was way outa date and I got picked out of a long line of traffic. Asked the officer "did you really see that while you were parked and I was going by at 55??!!" He said they train to spot out of date stickers, mainly by color. I was impressed....about $133 worth according to the citation.

Ouch! I always hate to get a ticket for something avoidable. I feel better about it when I was screwing around or speeding and actually deserve it. Of course, nobody ever WANTS a ticket, lol.

Yeah, Ryan is right about me being stopped for the lights here in Winthrop. I doubt anyone should have any problems if they have driving lights that are wired to work only with the high beams...the reason I was pulled over was because mine were not and I didn't even realize it at the time. I just got a warning for not dimming my lights to on-coming traffic. I took the lights off shortly after.

With that being said, they were nice to have and the bracket that iwagon made for them was excellent...so I would recommend them for the extra light and a subie with hellas is pretty awesome...just be sure to wire them up with the high beams so you don't have to mess around with a toggle switch all the time!

If I thought I could get away with driving with em, I would put 4 on a roof rack like PapaGak. I will wait until after I get some HIDs for the regular bulbs and see if I still need them, lol. Im running the stock halogens right now and they are still brighter than our other 6 vehicles headlights.

After driving in the snow today, I wish I had some yellow/amber fog lights. On empty stretches of road, the high beams helped a tad, but I had to concentrate on ignoring the snow flakes.

i wanna be able to have the lights turn on w the highbeam but also be able to "force" them on when i want to. like if its realy snowy and highs dont work or i wanna give someone a hella hello.

Dan, go with B, but please do something sturdier than a license plate mount. Mine shudders over every single bump... very annoying.

B. The lights are closest your headlights. Most functional. Lower is more likely to be damaged and less functional.
yeah but do u think haveing the lights high infront of the grill will cause overheating do to not enough airflow to the upper part of the radiator? and i agree w the damage and functionality being low

Nate, i have some ideas going around my mind i was thinking of a radiator mount and a bumper mount to try to stop the dreaded bouncy lights

im kinda stuck, i realy like the look of the RI skid guard but also agree with dan on the higher the light the more output and less damage. maybe a mix of both, RI skid guard and higher lights

I'm not sure. I know my RS has no issues, and RezPunk's wrx runs 4 lights infront of his grill. We're different gen cars with different gen motors though :I

Radiator mount for the primary structure is the best bet. I used 1/4 inch steel which doesn't vibrate at all. Just get a big hammer and use a bench vice to bend it, some old fashion blacksmithing
